Good enough VCRs...what should I consider for $200 or so?9Gturns

I live in a ski town that doesn't have a place that rents DVDs(yet). There is a place a mile away that rents VHS though. When I don't feel like running down the canyon for a DVD I can stop in there but need to add a VCR to my system.
I've had Sony and Mitsu in the past and liked them but the Mitsu's tape transport died after a year or so and the last Sony I had was ten years ago.
What is good enough for occasional duty that has good hi-fi and performance for around $200 retail (or very reputable online store) ? Is there a couple of standard favorites?

Thanks

Hi Fi VCR's are a 100 bucks everywhere. Even less at times, and even the major brands.

Another option if you wanted to get a DVD player, is to rent DVDs from www.netflix.com. They mail them to you and you return them when you want, no late fees. Just a thought...

I just bought a Sony N71Norm Strong

It cost $100. So far I have no regrets. I could have bought the JVC 782 for $10 less; it has some neat features. I chose the Sony because I can program it without turning on the TV set. That was a valuable feature for me.
Gotch you Norm!!SmokE

Hey Norm

>I chose the Sony (N71) because I can program it without turning on the TV set.

Is that real reason you bought the VCR, or is it because it came at #1 (out of 13 VCR) in the March issue of ConsumerReport Magazine VCR's Face-off??

I have the JVC S4800U. Its and S-VHS vcr, with 2 s-video inputs and 1 s-video output. You might be able to get it now for under $200, I bought mine 2 yrs ago for around $250.
