Which Onkyo Receiver to get ?audiobuff_99
Feb 22, 2002 9:23 PM
After hastling with countless S-video cables for DVD, DV cam, component cables for VCR, cable , Dreamcast gaming system, a PC I have hooked up to the TV for playing back of DivX movies, I have decided to get one of these Receivers which accept video inputs in the back and then allows you to switch to which you want. However when I went to my local store and tell him I would like to use the receiver as a 'hub' for all this mess of video/audio in/out so I dont have to keep changing everything daily to accomodate what I want to do for that day, the salesperson tells me if I for example plug my DVD player into the S-Video jack on this Onkyo receiver I was interested in (494), that I would be losing quality and he doesnt recommened it. Now Im at a stumbling point and havent purchased anything. Can someone with experience with this stuff let me know what my options are? I do not like to lose quality for anything video/audio if I dont HAVE TO.

My budget is maybe upwards to $600 which would include the Onkyo (595) or any of the neat looking products Harmon Kardon has to offer or even some low end $400+ Denon's. Please Please any help in which one to get is appreciated. I am buying for 5.1 DTS digital sound BTW, so sound quality is very important. Thank you!

I will recomend you the Denon 2802 for about $700 from an authorized dealer or an Onkyo 696 for about $600 also from an authorized dealer. The 2802 will give you 6.1 ability while the 696 will only give you 5.1. Both receivers will do DD and DTS.

After looking at all the recievers out there, I went for the Denon AVR-2802. Great receiver, component switching, 3 optical in, 1 coax in and DPL2 does everything I want it to and sounds great. Take a look at the other AVR models and match them up against the others you are looking at.

Whew!!!! all those recommedation and still no real anwser to your question. I'm not going to say which is better, but what you should be looking for. Any newer model should handle your switching requirements of your units without any loss of signal quality. From what you have posted I would say find a AV unit that has the greatest number of S-video inputs for all your input units. But you need to know that your TV will need to have a s-video input also from the AV output s-video. I believe I read that you can't switch from s-video to composite or vice versa, It all has to be the same. What goes in must also come out! And with using s-video you will be sure to get outstanding picture quality ( the Deamcast will sound and look awesome).

From what you have listed, all of your unit can use s-video cabling, (VCR may need to be upgraded).

To get an Onkyo 595 now you will likely have to settle for "B" stock or a floor model. They have been discontinued. Onkyo is releasing a new series of AV Receivers in April to replace the 494, 595, & 696.

Having said that, avoid HK like plague. I came down to between the Denon 1802 and the Onkyo 595 in my purchase, and came across a great deal on a 595 so I took it ($400 new). I haven't noticed any S-Video quality loss swicthing via the 595.
