Which 27' TV to get?Vadimr
Feb 23, 2002 8:07 AM
I'm looking to get a new 27 inches or maybe a little bigger TV for my home theather and I still can't decide which TV to get. Can someone recommend something rather inexpensive yet still good. I'm not interested in thos RCA and all those cheap brands. It has a normal TV for a normal price. Not HDTV.

Thanks

I agree with the brands listed by recoveryone except the Sony. Sony is good but since you asked for inexpensive brands I'd cross Sony off the list. I'd also add two other brands to the list : JVC & Panasonic.

An excellent TV but inexpensive TV is 32 inch model from Toshiba 32A41 $550. It received "Excellent" picture rating from CosumerReport Magazine and have one year warranty :)

Pansonic 27D11/27D21 has not been getting good reviews lately and to top it off, it only carry three months warranty . Out of 21 27-inch Tvs, it came in dead last in term of picture quality via S-video, and in 32 inch catagory (32D11), it did not do better as it came almost last along side Sanyo in term of picture quality . I think we can do better than that.

In $350 price catgory, you will have two choices. You can go by reliability or picture quality. For reliability, go with Toshiba 27A41 or JVC 27D302. Both are almost the same price $350 and carry one year warranty. If you want best pictute quality, then go with Sony 27S42 ($379)

I have Sony 27S44 in my bedroom and it beat out Toshiba and JVC in term of picture quality (I tried all three TVs) and it was the only non-flat 27 inch TV that recieved "excellent" picture quality rating-via Svideo input-in the above report. Be aware that Sony carry three months warranty. The choice is yours

Ok thanks for that advice, you see I wasn't aware what's good now so I wanted to go with Panasonic like I always did before but since you say it's not that good I'll go with something else. The warranty 90 days sucks, I can always buy extended warranty if I'm buying a TV from one of these big stores, like Cucuit City, best buy or whatever..
Anyway thanks for the advice, I will go and see now how much it will actually cost me.

I was in the sameboat as you are, 2 weeks ago, I finally narrowed my choice down to 2 sets. Toshiba 27A41, and Philips 27PS50B. Both priced at $299 from Best buy. Picture quality on both were equal to one another. Both had better picture quality than the JVC, and Panasonic sets of simialr price. I ended up going with the Philips becasue It had a slightly better sounding sound system in it, but the Toshiba was also nice. they both have component video inputs, s-video in, front/side composite and back composite.
hope i helped
