| Denon receiver quality??? | toddo97 Feb 23, 2002 5:27 PM | | As part of my ongoing quest for a home theater system, I checked out a mid-high end stereo store today to look @ their receivers & speakers. I listened to some Definitive Technology speakers (good?) that sounded pretty good. When I told the owner that I was thinking about buying the Denon 2802 receiver, he said that the very high end Denons are really good, but the mid range receivers (2802 included) aren't as high of a qualtiy as Denons used to be. He recommended the Yamaha 620 over the 2802. What's the scoop?? |

Given that Denon recently went through an ownership change, and given the horrendous period they went through with their DVD players last year, it is possible that their quality's more inconsistent than before. But, compared to what I've read about some Sony, h/k, and Marantz models, I don't think you're taking a huge risk by going with Denon. Just make sure you buy from an authorized dealer, so you get all the requisite warranty support. As for the 620 over the 2802, I would look at the Yamaha RX-V1200 as well -- it's much more the equivalent to the 2802 in terms of features and performance. The 620's gotten uniformly positive reviews from the published reports I've read, but it is missing 6.1 format support and DPLII. If those features are important to you, look at the 1200 instead. As far as reliability goes, Yamaha's been consistently at or near the top since they began making receivers in the early 70s. |

I like Denons, I have a 2802 and I love it. The manual is annoying, but you get used to it. I also use a Yamaha for music listening. I like the Denon more for movies and the Yamaha more for music. You can't go wrong either way. They are both quality makes. |
