| Help on Room layout | ingadog Feb 24, 2002 10:30 PM | | My intended new listening/HT room has some weird dimensions -- 24 x 12 x 8.5 (feet). One end of the room is narrower than the opposite 12 ft. wall. (around 9 ft.) Making it look like a fat "L" shape. (See attached diagram) This narrower wall is the wall against which I plan to place my HT components. The farther 12 ft wall is a passage way and cannot be used.
The question is: Is it advisable to place my components against this narrower wall? How will it affect the sound?
In addition, I may have problems hanging the surround speakers on the side walls since one would in effect be farther from the listening position.
Or Should I use the longer walls instead?
Thanks a million for any help!!! |
| Tough room if you can't use that 12' wall | Richard Greene Feb 27, 2002 2:32 PM | | Your speakers should see a symmetrical environment.
Only the right half of your room (or at least the right half of your chart) is symmetrical ... but you wrote "The farther 12ft. wall is a passageway and cannot be used".
I can't think of any way to use the other side of the room
without placing one of your main speakers considerably closer to a wall/room corner than the other. The speaker placed closest to a wall or corner will have more bass output (will sound louder and different) than the other speaker.
I guess the solution is good old trial and error.
Speakers sound best if there is at least three-four feet of free space around them (360 degrees).
Subwoofers usually sound best when placed in a room corner |

You might be able to cheat that effect slighly by placing the subwoofer in the corner near the speaker with less bass (further from its corner). As non-directional as bass supposedly is, it's ususally pretty easy to locate where its coming from.

| Tough room if you can't use that 12' wall | ingadog Mar 19, 2002 7:23 AM | | Thanks for the advice guys (Richard Greene and dkap)!
Trial and error, after error, after error. I finally found a workable solution. I disregarded the small enclosure (the part with the nine foot wall), and made it an equipment and storage area. I placed my TV and speakers all the way up beyond the inside corner with an imaginary 12 ft wall now behind it. At least now the speakers are symmetrically placed. But as both of you said, one speaker is still nearer to the wall behind it than the other, resulting in more bass from that speaker.
I will try your suggestion to place the sub nearer the "weaker" speaker. That's would seem to be good idea. Thanks again for the advice. I'll update you if this works. |
