Onkyo 595...analog through?Old_lane

Can I pass an analog signal through my receiver without the receiver converting it to digital and back to analog? I ask this because I'm looking to buy a new CD player. I don't want to spend a whole lot on it if I can't use the CD players DAC and bypass my receivers digital circuitry. If I can't pass the signal through then I'll probably spend about 100-150 on a cheap sony 5 disc player and hook it up with digital coaxial if possible or analog. (I ran out of optical).

well, i had the same question last week and it's posted on the next page of the home theater board. i got some help here from woochifer and also contacted onkyo by e-mail. i have an onkyo tx-ds777. they assured me as long as i use the multi-channel inputs, the signal will go thru without a digital conversion. i would think the multi-channel input is designed the same way for all the onkyo receivers. don't use the analog cd input, it will digitize the signal. i got an excellent tip from woochifer on testing out my receiver to see how each input is affected. hook up your cd player thru the multi-channel inputs and and see if the receiver will block out the use of any dsp modes you enter. my receiver blocked any dsp functions with the display reading..."multi-channel engaged". this is one indication that the multi-channel input is not a part of the digital chain. however, when i tried using dsp modes with the cd analog input, the receiver allowed these changes indicating a digital conversion of some degree. i then compared the sound of my cd player (yamaha cdc-685) hooked up with rca cables thru the 5.1 inputs and digitally thru the fiber optic input of my onkyo. i was able to level match db levels of both sources for the test because my onkyo has the "intellivolume" feature which equalizes the volume of all input sources. i found that the cd player sounded better thru the multi-channel inputs. the bass response was noticeably deeper, a more full bodied sound to it. a drawback to using a standard cd player thru the 5.1 inputs is that you can't use the 5 channel stereo mode. to use all 5 speakers, you would have to get an sacd or dvd-a player. based on these findings i plan on getting an external dac and run my cd player thru that and then into the 5.1 l/r main inputs of the onkyo.
