onkyo 696 tripping problemprashanth_sharma

hi,

Has anyone experienced the Onkyo 696 tripping (displays PROTECT on the display and shuts off) when the volume is turned loud (into the mid 30s) ?

I have it hooked up to the Ascend acoustics 5.1 pkg. The individual speaker levels (at the receiver) are set to:
- Mains +4
- Center +12
- Sorrounds +8 and
- Sub 0.

It trips at about 33 (volume level) when running in the 'All channel stereo' mode and can go higher (i did not try far enuf) when running in 2 channel stereo mode. The volume level was fairly loud but not REALLY loud, considering its rated at 100 watts per channel i expected it to handle these levels with ease.

Any explanation/solution to the problem ?

thx, prashanth

The Ascends CBM-170s are 4 ohm speakers which demand higher current output from your amp section than 8 ohm speakers. It may be that the Onkyo amplifier outputs are not happy with driving that impedance load at high volume level, and is going into protect mode.

I own a Onkyo 696 and have never had this problem. I use Atlantic Technology T-70 package and have had the volume at 60 with no distortion or problems.
