DVD Player for decoding???Wilhelm
May 4, 2002 9:01 AM
Hello.

I notice many VCR's and DVD players advertised as having DTS, Dolby 5.1, etc. What experience do people have using these instead of an outboard processor or AV pre-amp?

And another thing... Do Digital TV's still cut the sides off regular, over air broadcasts? How do the signals from a Digital Satelite appear?

Newbie Thanks

W.

Not standard VCR's offer Dolby Digital.you may be thinking of the digital VCR DVR format. As for using the DVD players decoder, most people don't. They use what is usually the better decoders built into todays receivers. Plus you don't have to mess with buying all the extra cables to hook it up with.

As for the TV issue, they aren't "cutting off the sides..." they are just showing a 4:3 regular sized image that we're used too with our "regular" TV's and of course that won't fill a 16:9 sized TV screen. Unless the show is produced in widescreen, you will always have the bars on the left and right side of a widescreen TV's screen. Of course you could "stretch" the image to fit the widescreen TV if you don't like the bars.
