Is it worth me buying a PRO-LOGIC 2 receiver?dgjr
May 5, 2002 5:14 AM
I have an Onkyo in my living room & a Yamaha in my bed room neither one of them has PRO-LOGIC 2. Is it worth the money buying another receiver for better sound?

Thanks for the replys.

What is the capability of your present components? Pro logic 2 is just an improvement fpr better steering of movie Dolby stereo soundtracks, not for 5.1 sound. Don't think you will gain anything for music.

....DLP-II can be viewed as another DSP mode. It will create ambient channels (5.1) for two channel sources. But it never rival sound quality of real desrete 5.1 channel such as DD or DTS.

Firt let's see why you would not need it.
If you are more into music than HT then it DPL-II Music can be sacrificed for. Also, if most of your HT is from DVDs then you don't have to have DPL-II.
On the other hand if most of your listening/viewing is HT then you most definitely need it. Why? because DPL-II takes over where 5.1 leaves off! If you watch a lot of TV shows, cable satellite whatever, this is one DSP you should have. No matter what anyone says, plain DPL just does not come close to DPL-II. I watch a lot of satellite/digital TV and movies on TBS/TNT, etc. just come out alive with DPL-II.
Also I never thought I'd give the time of the day to some DSP to listen to my music but more than often I find myself listening to a variety of music in DPL-II Music mode.
So IMHO, I would definitely get DPL-II if I'm doing more HT and less Music.

Have you compared DPL II and DPl on music?

There is nothing like good old 2 channel stereo with best placement for proper imaging but if I had to choose a DSP for music listening, it would be DPL-II even over the highly touted 5-Channel stereo. DPL pales in comparison, or rather there is no comparison.
Nick, what happened to you??Mr Mono

I think spending too much of your time with car speakers and Sony walkman TV while in the jail..(ahem)..vacation, has altered your perception of DPL-II :)

Mr.Mono, anything sounds better than a Walkman TV with car speakers. (LOL) However, DPL-II as a format has grown on me immensely. Jazz and Classical sound much more alive. For Rock it's always 2-channel stereo though. Believe me, I haven't gone to the 5-channel stereo mode in months.
BTW, anymore references to my "vacation" only means facing my "POSSE"!!
I may have to do what Terrence did!Mr Mono

And that is to run away from your POSSE :)
Nick, no posse damn it!!!!!Terrible Terrence

Nick,
The last time I had to break up a fight between your posse and some undesireables, I got a cap popped in me ass. Your posse is dangerous, wild, and totally lacking any self control(I guess thats what makes them so effective), so they must be kept on lock down. I already got two holes in me ass and there is no room for another. NO POSSE!!!

Mr. Mono, no more mentioning "vacation". The posse seems to always miss your butt and hit mine. If you cannot refrain, I will be forced to hijack your mouse!

Terrence
