| Leave gear on? | DaveHK May 5, 2002 1:52 PM | | I wanted to know opinions about leaving a system on 24 hours a day. Studios always leave their gear on all the time to prolong the life of the gear because turing it on causes the big power spike thus shortening the life. Mechanics say if you could leave your car on all the time it would last longer, you're supposed to leave you computer on all the time. What about Home theater gear? |
| Two schools of thought on this . . . | Hairsonfire May 7, 2002 7:49 AM | | 1. Yes - maintains consistent operating temperature - Powering up and down reportedly does degrade longevity.
2. No - waste of electricity - increase risk of damage due to power surges and other nasty electronic anomalies.
Many highend preamps and cdp's are constantly on (standby function) whenever they are plugged in.
I turn my amps off.
Your call Dave. |
