My receiver has come close to quitting on me, so its time for a new one.

Features I would like:
Dolby Digital EX
DTS ES
Possibly THX surround EX, if I can get it this cheap
Component switching
I think you have the arrow backwardsNorm Strong

I've looked at Crutchfield.com and these are some of the receivers I am interested in. Any suggestions or comments.

JVC RX-8020VBK
Kenwood VR-6060
Kenwood VR-6070
Onkyo TX-SR600
Pioneer VSX-D811S
Sony STR DE 985
Yamaha HTR 5560

Which one seems to be the better one?

Of the ones on your list, I would go with the Onkyo or the Yamaha. Both brands offer solid performance and build quality. Over the years, I would say that Yamaha's had more consistently good reliability, but Onkyo should still be pretty good. Kenwood and Sony might give comparable performance, but their reliability record has been highly questionable. I haven't kept up with JVC and Pioneer, so I can't give an opinion on those brands. In the past, I've regarded their models as a step down in performance and build quality from Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, NAD, and Marantz.

Aside from price, do all these receivers have the features you need? A receiver makes switching from one device like a VCR, CD etc. to another easy. You need to decide what things you will be hooking up to it and check to make sure it has all the necessary inputs on the back. The abcense of just one thing could prove to be frustrating at the least. Do you want S Video switching? Do you need Component Video switching?
My vote would be for the JVC because I know what features are on it, own JVC and love my system. If I had to buy a new receiver, I would first check to make sure it had all the features I needed- and proceed from there.

You can get the Onkyo Txsr600 for 407 + 26.39 for shipping from www.jandr.com.
I checked it out at Circuit City not bad for the price.
It is on my top 5 list.
