| 5-channel stereo? | pillsbury May 5, 2002 4:35 PM | | Is this possible? I have an Onkyo 777 and was wondering if it's capable of such thing. Or do I have resort to finding a DSP mode that fits the mold? Thanks in advance ... |
| re: 5-channel stereo? | bubbawat May 6, 2002 4:02 AM | | I don't know about the Onkyo, but to get to 5 channel stereo it would most certainly be a DSP, since no one really records in 5 channel stereo. I use Denon's 7 channel stereo and have been quite pleased with the effect for music (it is very filling for HT but loses directional effects). In my set up I drop the center and two rear levels to -12db (that is practically zero output) so I can get full sound to my matched mains and sides. I am an aging two channel snob that found this setup preferable on 80% plus of my music.
The problem is that I am reviewing the Denon's ability with this DSP. Since I am not a big fan of most of the other DSPs of Denon because in my auditions I heard much better (both Onkyo and Yammie), it must be judged by each receiver. |
| clarification... | Keith from Canada May 6, 2002 6:21 AM | | 5-channel stereo isn't a DSP per se and there won't be a difference between Denon's 5-channel and Onkyo's. |
| Thanks, and then... | bubbawat May 6, 2002 8:40 AM | | Thanks for clarification. So the question is if this isn't DSP, how is the center channel added- I assume it is matrixed. Is there a common matrixing mathematics for this? I can see how the right to right and left to left would work, but figured there was some sort of goofiness of delay or frequency segregation to get to some engineers defined nirvana on the sides/rears.
Please have patience with the technically retarded.... |
