| Da List: May 6, 2002 | Adam May 6, 2002 5:54 AM | | 10. Why do people have this ability to remember not overly talented musicians as amazing musicians, after they pass away? When Aaliyah passed away MTV and the like couldn't stop saying how tragic this would be to the music world because she was so talented...etc., etc. etc. Now the same thing with Lisa Lopes of TLC. I have to ask WTF? When John Lennon was shot, that was a HUGE TRAGEDY. That was a BLOW to the MUSIC INDUSTRY. As horrible as the deaths of Aaliyah and Lopes were, let's remember them for what they were, some what talented artists who really didn't ground brake, raise the bar, or establish themselves as icons.
9. Since know one went in with me on the Klipsch deal, I had to forego that addition...
8. Did anyone else catch the 75 years of NBC special? I thought it was just amazing, I mean when you consider all of the news they covered in those 75 years: WW II, Vietnam, The Berlin Wall, etc.
7. So c'mon stand up and be counted, how many of you went to see Spiderman? I opted not to go, as I have no real desire to see it, besides Superman could kick Spiderman's ass any day of the week, although Thor might have kicked all their asses :)
6. I was never really in to Elvis Costello, but after hearing how good his latest album is I had to buy it...simply put this CD is PHENOMENAL.
5. The Jerry Maguire Special Edition is worth every bit of money, boasting a new transfer, deleted scenes, and commentary with Cuba, Tom, Cameron, and Renea, it was just damn good.
4. What is it about nice weather and turning your car sterio up when driving?
3. I watched ALI on DVD this weekend, first thing I have to say is what a sh!tty DVD, the ONLY extra is the Trailer...WTF? Anyhow, while I thought Will Smith's performance was awsome, I found the movie very lacking. I suppose when you consider the amount of history a person like ALI offers, it's tough to capture it all in a 3 hour flick, but I just felt like Michael Mann didn't even handle the major events well.
2. What is America's fascination with Mr. T? The man is everywhere, in commercials, TV cameos, movie cameos, talk shows. I love the guy but this is getting out of hand.
1. Took a trip over to Holm Audio in Joliet, IL this weekend, I really do love that place. Their selection of tubes and ribbon speakers amazes me to know end, though their customer service just SUCKS. Anyhoot, if you want a different take on Home Audio stores check it out. |
| Artists are more famous when they are dead. | Mr Mono May 6, 2002 6:13 AM | | Just look at what happened to Elvis. His music might have not been the greatest, but they call him the king of Rock and Roll :)
Was movie Ali really that bad?? May be Spike Lee or Martin Scorsese should have directed that movie. |
| re: Da List: May 6, 2002 | Old_lane May 6, 2002 6:26 AM | | 10. Good point. I actually caould care less about their deaths. Not to sound callous but I only care about the deaths of my family and friends. It kills me to see that thousands of people turn out to Biggie's and tupac's funerals and lots of people continue to mourn the deaths of those they never even knew. It really is a media phenomenon, like when princess diane died and everyone talked about what a great lady she was. Hey she even made a list of the most influential people in the world ahead of Stalin (now I'm not saying killing a million people is a good thing but it was influential unlike anything Diane did. And BTW Mother Theresa died around the same time and she probably ended up with a small column. Goes to show how people take entertainment a little too seriously and world events a little too lightly.
9. I would've bought that deal and sold the other speakers on ebay. (if I had a klipsch system I probably would've got those off you...great deal)
8. Didn't see it no comment
7. Nope, I no longer go to the theaters. It seems a waste to me when I can rent or buy the DVD and enjoy it in the comfort of my home with a beer in one hand and my bong in the other.
6. Listen mostly to rap, r&b but I really want to start listening to other stuff. Can anyone make some good reccomendations for Jazz, Blues, Classical music.
5. Probably going to get this DVD soon glad to hear such good things about a great movie.
4. Good weather, windows down, more wind noise so music has to go up.
3. Grrr, if there are no extras (which I usually don't care for) I would like to see a great transfer (like superbit)
2. I pity the fool who don't like Mr.T. Gotta love a guy who regularly refers to himself in the third person and uses the words "jibber jabber"...fool |
| pity the fool | Kam May 6, 2002 7:36 AM | | #7 Spiderman... saw it and really enjoyed it. WHILE Superman prolly could take Spidey, Batman (just a man without a single "superpower" to him) could take, has taken, and anytime can beat Superman (no offense Clark but Bruce is the man!).
#2 Mr. T... I have no idea where the T resurgence is coming from either, but I just love that it looks like he's having as much fun making fun of himself and just enjoying a renewed 15minutes. Better more of him than any of carrot-top. And can you get a better badguy than Clubber Lang?
peace

She was a charming girl and conducted her self in a classy way. She never gave in to that "Even though I am educated let me try to act ghetto since I am a black artist"...i.e Alicia Keyes" I was lucky to have met her. Now Lisa Lopes......thats another story. She was nada. Overall people just like to make a fuss over tragic news. Media loves to feed on the negative

7.I went and thought it was fantastic. Now of course I could kick Spideys ass but the fact is that Raime hit the nail on the head. The movie was accurate and enjoyable. They really stuck to the story with the exception of the webbing thing (but that change was for the better IMO) It ranks up there with Superman and Batman as the greatest comic to movie transfers.

4.I hear that......the louder the tunes the faster we go ;o)
3.Man I just saw ALI and I thought it was lousy. I dont know what Mann was thinking. I was so dissapointed with the film. Jon Voight was the scene stealer. If it wasn't for him I would consider the whole film a loss. Jamie Foxx was pretty good to.
2.Hahaha I just say him make a cameo in Not Another Teen Movie...(funny flick by the way)
1.Wish I had a place like that by me ;o( |

RG comments:
Those young singers had "potential" and they were very popular at the time they died. We'll never know how good they would have been, assuming they had not yet reached their artistic peak.
John Lennon was long past his prime when he was shot.
His best recording was probably Plastic Ono Band ten year earlier. And he had been out of the limelight as a house husband for many years. Several good songs on Double Fantasy suggested Lennon might make a comeback ... but his best work was in the 1960's and early 1970's.

I was an Elvis Costello fan since "My Aim is True" was
originally released ... but have not heard many good songs from him in many years. I previewed his new CD along
with Neil Young's new CD at a Borders bookstore recently
-- both are pretty good. |
| re: Da List: May 6, 2002 | ghs1998 May 6, 2002 8:13 AM | | 10. I think that alot of this has to do with MTV catering to the 16-24 female crowd or top-40 listeners. While both Aaliyah and Lisa Lopes were not as talented as John Lennon, c'mon, who is? They were talented in their own right, and their deaths created a longing by fans for MTV news coverage and reminisces of their lives. Remember, Aaliyah was a very, very popular artist and TLC was, and still is, the best selling female group of all time. MTV is just simply putting out what the majority of their viewers want to see. Do you think that MTV would be wise if instead of putting on the high-school friend of Lopes talking about how great and talented she was, they decided to put on a serious music critic who dismissed Lopes as a second-rate artist but a first-rate arsonist? But one thing that really pisses me off is the absence of coverage for the death of Lane Staley, the lead singer of Alice n Chains. This guy, and this band, was a ground breaker, and I still get chills listening to Dirt, especially Would.

8. Didnt see it, NC
7. Looks interesting, but the F/X look cheesy and cartoonish. Much more interested in MIB2 this summer
6. Elvis Costello is amazing. I must get this CD soon.
5. Getting it this week. HUGE Cameron Crowe fan
4. The warm weather always brings out the window-shattering guido in me.
3. Ali was just a bad movie. Nothing really went right. I wanted to like this movie, being a Michael Mann, Will Smith, Jon Voight, Jamie Foxx, and ALI fan, but it was simply bad. The only undercurrents in this movie that remained constant was that Ali was a boxer, a Muslim, and a skirt chaser.
2. B.A. Barracus is the man. Give the cancer survivor a break, he deserves every bit of cashesh he gets

8) Missed it
7) Will wait for the DVD and yes, Bruce is da man
6) Don't like any musicians with the name Elvis (so far)
5) OK
4) I have BOSE in both my cars so nice weather or not....
3) Will watch ALI this weekend
2) I'll take Mr.T over Howie
1) Damn ADam, that was the right opportunity for some of us to make the salesman's life miserable for a couple of hours at least. |
| re: Da List: May 6, 2002 | Terrible Terrence May 6, 2002 10:52 AM | | 10. As Doc outlined in his post it was the "potiential" of these artists that makes their early departure so tragic. Not their current accomplishments
9. I hate it when uncooperative people hinder my visionary quest for audiotopia.
8. Between CBS and NBC doing these tributes, I have realized that the best days of television have already passed I am afraid.
7. Okay damnit I did! It was pretty good I thought.
6. Like Nick I have never cared for anyone named Elvis.
5. I agree, it was damn good.
4. The women that are attracted to your loud music, or the fact you are naked and driving!
3. I thought Will Smith did a excellent job in this movie. I wish the movie was excellent though.
2. Well being a Mr T myself, I can tell you it is definately my shaved head, muscular body, great personality, my smarts, and a incredible nack for falling in the right places at the wrong time!
1. I will never understand anyones love for the "tube" sound unless we are talking Hammond Organs. I am sorry I ever read about measurements performed on several ribbon, electrostatic, and planar speakers. They measure so poorly in so many areas I just don't understand the love of this sound. |
