Star Wars trilogy on DVD?deanbrew

What's the deal with the Star Wars trilogy DVD sets being auctioned on ebay? Note that people are actioning off sets of VCDs as well as 5.1 DVDs, all listed as being in English.

Has anyone seen the 5.1 DVDs? What about the VCDs? Any reports on the quality of the pictures and sound?

Here's the link to an auction that just ended for the 5.1 DVDs.

Dean,
These are bootlegs derived from the printmaster used to create the non-bootleg Laserdisc. The picture quality is fair, but the audio is waaay overcooked. It is mastered at levels way beyond reference, the LFE is too loud and out of balance with the rest of the mix.

These are not good IMO by DVD standards, but pretty good by VHS standards.

I own a set of these and I think they are pretty good - for what they are. The sound is decent and the picture is nice. The set I have are DTS as well (whether that is true or not I don't know, but the DTS light does come on on the amp...) The ones I own have optional subtitles so you don't have to have the chinese letters on the bottom of the screen. They aren't without problems. Star Wars is the best of the bunch, the DTS works and the picture is good. A little pixelization here and there but nothing major. On Empire, 5.1 works but the DTS soundtrack was about 30 seconds behind the movie, picture quality was good.

Return of the Jedi (DTS version) would not work at all and I had to return it twice and I ended up getting an earlier non DTS version. The sound is decent and in 5.1, although the dialogue seems to be a few microseconds out in 2 chapters (not that noticable) The picture quality is good.

Better than video? I prefer the digital media but that is just me. Worth owning? If you are a Star Wars Fan and can't wait until after episode three to see these on DVD, then yes, worth owning.

But buyer beware.... The DTS are good but Jedi didn't work. They may have improved it but that was my expereince with it.

Kip
