| Dish Network & DirecTV Merger | blammo585 May 7, 2002 3:16 PM | | I really want to get a new satellite receiver with HD decoding for antenna signals as well. Since I've heard about the merger with Dish and DirecTV I sent Dish Network an email asking them what kind of equipment would work after the merger is complete. They said no details were set but existing Dish customers would not have to change anything. Has anyone else heard if this is true? I don't want to buy $700 worth of equipment only to have it become obsolete. |

Worry not, what you were told is undoubtedly true. Regardless of whether or not this "marriage" is consummated, the purchase of a Dish Network HDTV receiver (model 6000) will NOT become obsolete.
If on the other hand, you opt for a DirecTV Hi-Def unit, it could become obsolete if the "merger" becomes a reality. Echostar will replace any "standard" DirecTV receivers, but HDTV receivers just might not be included in the conversion upgrade process.
Hope this helps you

| No fear . .either way | IsmaVA May 8, 2002 10:06 AM | | It is "undoubtedly" uncertain which one of the two systems will be used, or even if a new third system will be developed, as the Dish people said, no details are set.
However, both companies have agree to replace, at no cost to the customers, existing DirecTv equipment (including Tivo, Ultimate TV and HDTV, not just the standard units) if new equipment is needed after the merger.
So, either way, there is nothing to fear.
As always, my advice is to go with whoever give you the best equipment/programming deals.
Good luck. |
| I would go with Dishnetwork nevertheless :) | Mr Mono May 8, 2002 2:03 PM | | As of now, Dish uses two satellite for their satellite feed (vs Direct that only uses one satellite) which tell me Dish is more capable and ready to deal with bandwidth problem as more and more local channels are added to the line up. I have Dishnetwork and picture quality I get (even with basic channels) still amazes me. |
| Well . . . | IsmaVA May 8, 2002 3:31 PM | | Directv also uses two satellites for HDTV and other programming (I have the spanish language programming), the single sat dish is just for their "core" programming (meaning most popular)
However, Dish do offer one or two extra HDTV channels . . . |
| Well . . . | beerme1 May 10, 2002 9:22 AM | | Wait a minute.
DirecTV has HDNET, HBO and Showtime now in HD.
Dish has HBO and Showtime.
Unless there is something I am missing, cuurently DirecTv has more HD than Dish.
There is a new Discovery Channel in HD that is set so begin
in June.
No details have been announced yet as to who is going to be
carrying it though. Although I would suspect that Dish, DirecTv and 4DTV will all be carrying it, it is only speculation on my part. |
| re: Dish Network & DirecTV Merger | BrianT May 12, 2002 2:38 AM | | I would go with a ptv reciever. Once you have one you will never know how you got along without it. The dishplayer has had a lot of problems and you need to install a larger hard drive than what comes in it. They seemed to have worked most of the problems out since the 5720 software download a few weeks ago. I have heard nothing but praise from direct tv's tivo. Has duel tuners and many great features. |
