| Playstation2 and Dolby Digital? | Night Wolf May 8, 2002 3:35 PM | | Hello, i was wondering if anyone knows if there will ever be a game on PS2 that is full dolby digital ingame, PS2 has the opticle out port and can handle dolby digital, Metal Gear Solid 2 has dolby digital, but only on the cutsceens, i am wondering if there would be dolby digital in game
imagine playing like resident evil, and not seeing anyone in front of you, but you hear some breathing and stuff behind you, you turn around and there is a zombie right there, that would be cool |
| re: Playstation2 and Dolby Digital? | Woochifer May 8, 2002 4:13 PM | | MGS2's the only PS2 game I've played that has any 5.1 Dolby Digital on it. (Didn't notice that the 5.1 surround was only on the cutscenes, but I guess that makes sense.) I'm not sure if this is because the Playstation can't pass a 5.1 signal through the optical out during gameplay or if game designers just haven't put it into any games yet. You might want to go over to the video game review forums and ask over there.
I know that the Xbox has 5.1 DD on some of its games, but given that I'm still stocking up on older PSX games (hadn't owned a video game console since Sega Genesis), I'm not about to shell out 3-large for yet another console when I still have a center speaker and subwoofer to buy! Besides, Xbox still can't play GTA3 and that game's a must have in my book; plus, a lot of the best sellers from last year (like Gran Turismo 3) have come down in price, which makes it great for cheapskates like me who cringe at $50 a game! |
| re: Playstation2 and Dolby Digital? | dave5 May 8, 2002 5:30 PM | | xbox has ingame dolby digital on most of its games |
| re: Playstation2 and Dolby Digital? | Night Wolf May 8, 2002 5:40 PM | | . i hate Xbox soo much for soo many differnt reasons (i am not going to get into that, i argue on video game fourms and stuff all the time:) yeah MGS2, on the option menue it says cutseen Dolby Digital on/off, so that must meen its only on DD durring cutseens, and i noticed when i was playing MGS2, durring the game my reciever went back to PCM (as if it wasn't getting a digital signal)
.i have a friend that lives a mile down the road who has a Xbox, i will have to tell him to bring it over and se how it sounds on my system
. hopefully more and more devlopers will put in 5.1 DD in games, (everyone argues about graphics, but say NOTHING about sound) i could careless about graphics, its the gameplay that makes a game
well, better stop before we start an argument about the system wars, Thanks for the information though |
| Hey Woochifer.............. | Night Wolf May 8, 2002 5:53 PM | | do you have AIM or AOL? if so we could chat, we seem to have alot in common (audio, well duh, why would we be here, PS2, GTA3, etc...) IM me my screen name is
Inoventions East
maybe we could chat, that would be cool |
| Hey Woochifer.............. | Woochifer May 8, 2002 6:43 PM | | I don't leave my AOL messenger open too often. I use Netscape 6.2 to manage all my e-mail accounts. The handle I give out in public is SFWooch. You can try it or just e-mail me and I'll give you my spam-protected handle. |
| re: Playstation2 and Dolby Digital? | Woochifer May 8, 2002 6:41 PM | | FYI, PCM is an uncompressed digital audio stream, basically the same format as CD audio. In most instances it sounds better than DD (at least in two channel mode) because the data does not get compressed like it does with DD. I never noticed MGS2 reverting to PCM during game play. I guess I was too immersed in the game (and too clueless since the copy I rented from the video store did not have the directions included; I had to learn how to play through trial and error!) to notice the changing display on my receiver!
DD is nice because it can produce six discrete channels for surround sound and considering that the compression scheme can discard about 80 percent of the data, it delivers very impressive sound out of a very narrow datastream. But, not all DD tracks are 5.1 format. Even if the xbox soundtracks are output in DD, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's in 5.1 surround.
I agree with you on the system wars aspect -- it's all about the games. Micro$oft should know -- they've gotten by for over 20 years peddling inferior operating systems, but stayed on top because their OS' always held the upper hand on the application side (and resorted to business practices that the courts have now deemed illegal, but that's another story). Compared to the Nintendo 64, the PSX was crapola on the hardware side, but the games won out on that format war too. |
| In-game real-time DD impossible on PS2 (supposedly) | Widowmaker May 9, 2002 6:00 AM | | From what I've read, real-time Dolby Digital on the PS2 is impossible. There are games that utilize in-game dts. They include, but are not limited to, NHL 2002 (EA), SSX Tricky (EA Big), Sled Storm (EA Big), and the upcoming Freekstyle (EA Big). Also, all of the EA's next generation sports titles on the PS2 will use in-game dts (including, Madden, NBA Live, Triple Play, etc.). |
| In-game real-time DD impossible on PS2 (supposedly) | Night Wolf May 9, 2002 6:54 AM | | that is just as good, but better, i like DTS ALOT better then DD, it sounds much better, i was just saying in a genral way if there are any games on PS2 that has 5.1 surrond, i will have to give some of those games you mentiond a rent, and see how it works
. i am mostly on GameGossip.com fourms, (the GTA3 part) for system was, i go to gamespot, i somtimes read gamefaqs posts, but don't use it much, i have been staying away form system wars fourms though, because wehn people say PS2 sucks and givce stupid reasons (although i know they are wrong, and it dosn't suck) it makes me regreat my purches and not play my PS2 (although i love my PS2 and don't regreat it) |
| In-game real-time DD impossible on PS2 (supposedly) | Night Wolf May 9, 2002 6:57 AM | | .i wonder if Nascar 2003 will have DTS, it is made my EA, that woul be really cool, hitting someone on the right side of you and you hear it (and feel it from your sub) |
| In-game real-time DD impossible on PS2 (supposedly) | daniam May 9, 2002 4:45 PM | | Yeh, SSX Trickey sounds sweet in DTS, not all MGS2 cut scenes are in 5.1, I'm disapointed that they did not put the opening sequence in 5.1. |
| It thought that PS2 did use DTS ingame | Phillykid May 9, 2002 6:35 AM | | but I could very well be mistaken. BTW nightwolf do you argue over at the gamefaqs board (I'm wyen78 over there) I'm usually on the GameCube and X-box boards. Whatever you say about X-box all it's games are supposed to use DD. Halo in 5.1 surround is very sweet. You can hear the footsteps of covanent troops to the right or left or behind you before you see them. That gives you a chance to quickly turn and blast them before they get the drop on you which they try to do repeatedly.
I'm not a big fan of MS or their shady business practices but I must say, if a game (like spiderman) comes out on all three systems I'll get the X-box version becuase all their games support 480p, DD5.1, and they don't usually allow ports without additional material. Like in Spiderman you get two extra levels and better graphics.
I personally can't wait till morrowwind...only a few more days until RPG bliss...can't wait. |
| Pod racer | psm0110 May 10, 2002 8:04 AM | | The pod racer game (yellow box) I bought used has 5.1 in game. Crowd noise, etc. pretty sweet. seems spotty on some courses though. Frankly I've only played it a couple times. |
