Hello my Canadian, high alcohol Molson swilling chum, how is the basement? Have you finished everything, is the new TV fully calibrated?

I would love to see pictures of the finished product, and dont forget I will be pestering you, Adam, Wonderful Terrence, Mr Mono (my new hero) and others in a few months when my new home is complete.

Hope all is well.

Glad you asked...Keith from Canada

The basement is essentially finished with the exception of the final touches. I need to run baseboard and I need to get my father to run an oak cap along the bottom of the stairs but other than that, the basement...umm, I mean the Home Theater (woowhooo!!!) is now done!

The TV is in the basement and, much to my surprise, it looks fantastic without any real calibration! This surprises me because Panny's are known to have a severe red-push problem and the SVM on the unit is supposedly crap. I hooked it up to basic cable and the picture looked great after only about 5 minutes on S&V's calibration disc. I checked for red-push (using both the cheesy S&V red-push test as well as the SMPT test -- the colour bars -- and found that all of the colours looked perfectly natural -- generally yellow turns to a brown-orange when red push is present). As a result, I haven't played with the colour settings in the service menu as of yet and I'm still getting up the nerve to disconnect the SVM cables (although edge-enhancement is actually pretty good on this set).

All-in-all, I am immensly satisfied with both my basement and the TV. I've watched virtually all of my movies over again and can't believe I ever got by on a small 4:3 television!

Another bonus is the extremely nice entertainment unit my father built for me. Solid oak and an almost identical replica of a Thomasville unit that he managed to get the dimensions for. The only difference is the fact that my father built a full curio cabinet on the left side. Here's the Thomasville link (mine actually looks nicer...it has 2 lights in the curio and entertainment unit and 3 in the bridge...it also has full glass shelves on the curio side). Because there's no labour costs, I got it for $800 Canadian...it retails for about $2,500
