Nick,
The amount of power that a theater uses depends on its enternal volume. The typical 500 seat auditorium would probably use 400 watts for each screen speaker, another 400(or so) to the surrounds, and 800 watts for each sub.

The typical 600-1000 seat auditorium would use 600-700 watts per screen speaker and 1000-1200 watts for each sub

QSC amps are the most widely used amps along with crown.

Dolby has a online calibration tool that helps theater designers match speakers and amps to the size and shape of a auditorium.

Sir Terrence
Thank you your Kindness Sir TT (bowing down) :) (nt)nick4433

Hello,
I always wondered what it would be like if we hooked up home theater up in a regular theater...Say if we picked up what was at the house and placed in a real movie theater( Just go with me on this...I know it's flawed, just wondering on the sound).
Say for example you have a good 4000-5000 dollar system, with 1 sub.
Just wondering because when speakers are outside they seem 5 times louder( a theater is huge ). A twenty year old radio at my cabin can be heard a 1000 feet away!
What are your thought's??
Mark.

I put a pair of JBL 4412 studio monitors and a Nikko 440 amp (230 watts per) on the stage of real turn of the century theater, aprox 500 seats. It sounded great. More than loud enough. In the old days, many theaters powered their sound system with a couple 10 watt tube amps and Altec Voice of the Theater speakers.

That's probably due to lack of ambient noise more than anything special about the acoustics of the location or your radio's capabilities.
