| Dolby Digital problems | Ham1am Jul 26, 2002 9:18 AM | | Hello all. I'd like to watch dvd movies from my computer and listen to it in DD. I have a Denon AVR-982 receiver (http://www.denon.com/catalog/pdfs/AVR982.PDF) and a Sound Blaster Extigy (http://www.soundblaster.com/products/extigy/specs.asp). Both are capable of outputting Dolby Digital 5.1, but the receiver isn't registering the DD signal. The Extigy has a DD light lit, so my guess is it's the receiver.. am I right? Are these two not compatible? Is the receiver in need of repair? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Most of the time when people report this problem with a DVD player and receiver, it's usually because the DVD player's factory default is set to output to the analog out. Your soundcard's indicator light could just mean that it's decoding a DD signal, but outputing it analog.
I would also check and make sure that the receiver is not set to look for an analog signal first. Denon's manuals suck, but it should have some info on how to setup the digital inputs and set it up such that a source looks for the digital signal first. |

raindance: No offense taken.
I've been up and down the manual.. and I've tried different things. I hooked up the DVD player through the same optical cable and got a DD signal. The only thing that's different is that the DVD player outputs at 192kHz, and the extigy outputs 96kHz. Something else that might be a clue is that when I play a music DVD, the DVD player shows 96kHz on the front pannel, and I don't get a DD signal when the CD uses it. (the extigy outputs at 96kHz as well). The spec sheet says the Denon has/is a "Real 24 bit, 96 kHz Digital Interface Receiver".. perhaps it's messed up?
Thanks for the replies folks. Much appriciate it!
