| FIRST PICS OF DENON 1803!!! | fnkycld Jul 26, 2002 6:37 PM | | i did a search for avr-1803 on google and it brought up a german website (in all german of course) that had pics of the 1803. there was also a .pdf file link to the denon (of america) site but it wasn't working. well i played with the link a bit and finally got it to work. here it is!!! it looks REALLY close to the 2802 except for 10 less watts per channel (80) and also doesn't appear to have 7.1 preouts which kinda bums me out. i guess i understand it though...how many people actually end up using receivers at this price as a preamp? i doubt many. it DOES however have two preamp outs for the rear center channel which is pretty nice because it only has an amp for one rear center. all in all, it looks like a pretty darn good unit for what i'm guessing will be 499.99 again. take a look!
ps-if anyone can find pics of the rear of the unit let me know.

| re: FIRST PICS OF DENON 1803!!! | fnkycld Jul 27, 2002 6:35 AM | | You are correct. According to the brochure it only has preouts for the left and right REAR (not fronts) so that two speakers can be used for the rear center channel when using 6.1. Strangly enough though, it only mentions this on the first page. When you look at the second where it lists the exact specs, the only preout mentioned is that for the subwoofer. That's the reason I want to find a picture of the rear of the unit so bad. Hmmm...

| No Pre outs, that really sucks IMHO :) (nt) | nick4433 Jul 27, 2002 8:12 AM | | |

but if Denon 1803 has no pre out... why bother to upgrade? i know 1803 has more features for movies...but ...no pre out... that really sucks... |
| Not really... depends. | Audiophile Jul 27, 2002 2:01 PM | | If your room is not THAT big... then i think Denon's power would be enough for most of the room...
Denon 1803 would be able to fill up a 20 x 20 room... |
| re: FIRST PICS OF DENON 1803!!! | Woochifer Jul 27, 2002 4:41 PM | | Preouts only for subwoofer (mandatory) and 7.1 (dubious)? This is some pretty curious market positioning on Denon's part. They had preouts for the main channels on the 1802 when this wasn't a common feature on competing products. Now, they're taking those out and substituting a preout for a second rear channel? With the addition of 6.1 decoding and the rear center output, they've basically matched the competition without really vaulting over them. Now that they've matched the $500 6.1 models from Onkyo and Yamaha, it'll be interesting to see how these models compare in actual use. |
| Pre out might not be necessary... | Ph D Jul 27, 2002 6:03 PM | | I think the reason that you need pre out for front channels is, if you think the Denon's internal power amp. is distorting when you play it loud... If the Denon is capable of play it loud without distorting that i think it is not necessary to add a external amp... Adding a $500-600 amp will not really give you a big jump... unless you are getting a $1000> amp (Bryton, BK)... or if you are using a low sensitivity speakers... 80watts from Denon will drive a 90db sensitivity speakers very efficient-ly.
Correct me if i'm wrong... |
| Pre out might not be necessary... | Woochifer Jul 27, 2002 8:14 PM | | Yup, you're right in that there's no NEED for the preouts, but some buyers use low cost receivers as a substitute for an expensive processor and the preouts offer a nice intermediate upgrade. Considering that Denon had the preouts for the L/C/R channels in the 1802, it's a curious decision on their part to exclude them in the 1803, especially considering that more rival products now have all-channel preouts. Most buyers won't use them, but then again receivers generally contain a lot of features that never get used. It's more a matter of market position, which Denon typically maintains well. |
| Pre out might not be necessary... | Bryan Jul 29, 2002 8:41 AM | | The LCR preouts of the 1802 made it very competetive with the Outlaw 1050. Because they are only doing rear preouts, Denon's only advantage lies in DPL II. IMO, the adjustable crossover and better remote of the Outlaw outweighs the DPL II of the Denon. Seems to me Denon took a step backwards with the 1803. |
