| Questions about DTS 96/24... | fnkycld Jul 27, 2002 4:36 PM | | Is there any material out there yet that is encoded in DTS 96/24 for region 1 DVDs? If not, why??? I certainly haven't come across any. Also, are there any DVD players that have the decoder built in? I know the high end denon receivers have it, but my next receiver purchase won't be that expensive, so i'm looking to maybe take advantage of the technology through a new DVD player, which i also need to get. thanks,

| re: Questions about DTS 96/24... | Woochifer Jul 27, 2002 5:07 PM | | I haven't seen any DTS 96/24 discs at any of the stores where I shop (including a couple that make a point of stocking most available DTS music discs), nor have I seen mention of any commercially available titles at DTS' website (though their DTS music site is getting revamped for a relaunch, so it may not have gotten updated). The feature has made its way into Denon and Yamaha's flagship receivers, and I see no reason why the feature can't get incorporated into more models (aside from whatever royalty costs are associated with it). Unfortunately, for whatever merits the format has on paper, I see it as potentially similar to the situation with EX and 6.1 ES formats where you have widespread adoption of the format on the hardware side, but very few titles available, especially with DVD-A and SACD already delivering high res multichannel music and achieving limited success in the market. |
| There are some 96/24 PCM DVD out there. | KiD SmokE Jul 28, 2002 10:38 AM | | Classic and Chesky records do have DVDs that are released unrestricted and unwatermarked two-channel 24/96 recordings. |

Classic's transfers have uniformly excellent sound quality that easily bests the CD versions that I own. Dvdplanet.com sells them for about $18 a piece, and if you're into the titles that are available, it's well worth grabbing because in a way the 96/24 discs I've heard combine the best qualities of high quality vinyl and the attributes of well done CD transfers. Maybe it's just good mastering, but whatever the case, the quality is there. Too bad the catalog of titles available is so limited (Classic has only issued 40 or so titles in this format), and Chesky's pretty much transitioned over to DVD-A (including their 2/4/6 discs that include an inventive 6.0 track with two channels of height information) and SACD.
The promise of DTS 96/24 is that it can deliver 96/24 resolution for multichannel recordings (I believe that the original material is lossy, but there's DTS 96/24 has some way of reinserting the discarded bits), and can use a digital output from an existing DVD player. I'm still waiting to see a DTS 96/24 disc for myself. |

I may be wrong, but it seems to me like the biggest way to take advantage is dts 96/24 would be to incorporate it into dvd video. there are already various high-res audio formats out there. NOTHING would be able to compete with dts 96-24 in dvd-video though...am i missing something???

| Funky, if I am not mistaken.... | nick4433 Jul 29, 2002 7:06 PM | | DTS 96/24 music must be accompanied by some video even if it is still pictures? Please correct me if I am wrong. |
| Funky, if I am not mistaken.... | Woochifer Jul 29, 2002 7:31 PM | | I don't know if it must be. Supposedly, the DTS 96/24 demo pieces are audio-only, but I've never seen one so I have no idea if stills accompany them. I know that with my 96/24 PCM discs, they do come with still images, while the DTS 5.1 audio discs I have are nothing more than CDs outputing a DTS bitstream with a blank blue screen coming through the video portion. Here's the official info ...

| There are some 96/24 PCM DVD out there. | Woochifer Jul 29, 2002 7:24 PM | | I believe that 96/24 PCM playback is built into the DVD-V standard. For copyright concerns, a lot of early DVD players can only playback 96/24 PCM discs through the analog outputs, and downsample to 48/24 through the digital outs. 96/24 PCM is a true uncompressed high res digital format. Problem is that it can only playback in two channels.
I would guess that the main reason for not incorporating DTS 96/24 into DVD-V discs is space. If I'm not mistaken, DTS 96/24 does require more bandwidth than typical DTS soundtracks. DTS soundtracks are already a sporatically provided feature because a lot of discs are already trying to cram documentaries, galleries, DVD-ROM features, and other stuff onto single discs. Even Sony's Superbit discs, which do include DTS soundtracks, don't opt for the higher bandwidth DTS tracks in order to save bits for better video quality.
Since DTS 96/24 is supposedly backwards compatible, I would love to see the feature gain some steam. I mean, it would only be a matter of time before the feature trickles down to lower priced components, right? But, the question of whether we'd actually have discs to play is far from certain. |
| There are some 96/24 PCM DVD out there. | Ray from RI Aug 2, 2002 7:36 PM | | I too have some Cheksy and Classic 96/24 DVDs, but haven't seen any new release for months, until...
Sarah McLachlan's debut "Touch" is just now out. I ordered it, but is on back-order. Maybe there are more people out here that are interested in the format than are given credit for.
Until there's good quality and affordable DVD-A/SACD out, I'm still wishing the success of this format. [Yeah, I know DVD-A players are plentiful and cheap, but my 5.1 input is already taken by SACD.]

| Thanks! NOW, I see the DTS 96/24 titles! | Woochifer Jul 29, 2002 7:38 PM | | I didn't realize that DTS is now transitioning over their multichannel music discs to DVD-A, and that the transfer includes DTS 96/24 tracks! Very cool, although another side of me says -- oh great, as if we needed yet another format! |
