I am moving into a new apartment, and I need to buy a new receiver to begin my home theater. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will also need speakers, so suggestions are welcome.

What kind of price range you looking at? And are you looking for two-channel or home theater?

For speakers, it's wide open -- do you want bookshelfs or floorstanding, do you want to start with two speakers or do you prefer to go with a full five speaker package with subwoofer?

I am looking for a home theater receiver, and I am thinking with starting with 2 speakers and building from there (as I get the money).

Thanks.

Check these two things out. I have been using the AR HC6 system since last Christmas with great results

I would go for used if I were you. That is how i got started in all this mess. You can find some really great deals for about 1/2 or less of what you would pay for something brand new. Same goes for speakers although with those, I would be a bit more careful.

You should be able to find a good Yamaha or Denon amp that retailed for $6-800 a few years ago and still works fine for $2-300. Check out the classifieds on this site, e-bay or audiogon.com.

I would suggest you determine which features you must have (DD 5.1 and/or DTS) and which you don't need, and go from there. If you are just hooking up a VCR and a CD player, you could even get a Dolby Pro-logic amp for really cheap.

If you go woth used stuff though, make sure it hasn't been abused - you can usually tell this by just looking at it. It is pretty obvious (usually) if a person took care of their equipment or not (dust, scratches, beer can rings etc)

Also, most people can relate to the "first" system and will probably cut you an even better deal!

Hope that helps,

Good luck and have fun!

For speakers, used is your best bet. Try here, harmonicdiscord.com, ebay.com, or audiogon.com for some excellent deals. Paradigm, B&W, Def Tech, PSB, nOrh, Swan Diva, ACI, etc. are all excellent brands. Another option would be the DIY speakers from Parts Express. I believe they are the Ed Frias speakers and go for around $300 a pair including the cabinets.

For a receiver, shop around. Stick with Denon, Marantz, Harmon Kardon, Onkyo, Yamaha, and Outlaw. A 100 WPC JVC RX-8000V is less powerful than a 70 WPC Yamaha RX-V496. (Yes, I own both.)
Thank you for the advice... nttbodine

There a numerous brands of inexpensive speakers that sound good.

Cambridge Soundworks Model 6 or Newton M-60 / Newton M-80 are very good values. Check them out at Hifi.com where you can arrange to listen them in your home.

The model 6 was rated a best buy by consumer reports. I own a pair and there aare many $600 speakers I don't like as well.

soundcity.com had a good buy on PSB Alpha AVs for $169/ pair.
