| Sir TT, Nick, Mr. Mono, others, -- Parts Express SPL meter | JDaniel Jul 30, 2002 11:40 AM | | I read Sir TT and Nick's "debate" below on calibration. I own a Rad. Shack SPL meter, and when he was just plain Terrence, and Mr. Mono was just plain Smokey, they helped me greatly in calibrating my system, including my sub. (about a year ago). And it did sound remarkably better.
I too have read about the Rad. Shack meter deficiencies, and seen the correction tables - not that I'd understand them.
Which brings me to my next question: I found a Parts Express sound meter for $50 - http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&PartNumber=390-750&DID=7
Would this one have similar deficiencies, or are those limited to the Rad. Shack brand. And has anyone on this board used this model?
Just wondering.
JDaniel
ps - I'm glad Nick, Doc Greene, Pogue, Woodman, JoeB and others don't change monikers like clothes. I need a moniker chart like the Radio Shack SPL meter correction chart just to keep up with everybody (LOL). |

Thank you |

AS far as the SPL meter goes, I am not an expert on sound measuring devices but upon reading the bit of info, it appears that the SPL meter has only two operating frequencies and only offers A weighted measurements. The RadShack meter has individual frequencies in 10db increments and offers A & C weighted measurements. For what it's worth, I'd get a radshack meter unless Sir TT says this one is better then damn it, I am ordering one too! |
| Sorry JDaniel, I got beside myself on latest trip to London... | Sir Terrence the Terrible 1 Jul 30, 2002 1:57 PM | | JDaniel,
I have not personally tried this SPL meter, but it has some features that I found appealing. The calibration tests it can perform is a really good feature. I have this on my IVIE SPL meter that cost about 4 times this meter. I think to find out if it has some deficencies you would have to try it out and compare it with the RS meter to see if their measurements match.
I think it might be worth looking in to.
You can thank Doc Greene(who would never change his moniker for fear of a identity crisis) for the moniker change. Terrible Terrence was such a burden and did not truely reflect who I was. When Doc Greene said Sir Terrence, I wept and realized I have found a moniker that truely resonated in my audio mind.
I want to thank Doc Greene my mentor, and my mother for having me.... A...huh...um.....what?....this is NOT the audio/video academy awards?.......Well....Nevermind!
Sir Terrence(please bowing embarasses me) |
| JDaniel, didn't you read what Nick wrote? | KiD SmokE Jul 30, 2002 2:23 PM | | He said as long as it get you into ball park, it doesn't matter what SPL metter you use..LOLOL |
| JDaniel, didn't you read what Nick wrote? | mtrycrafts Jul 30, 2002 8:18 PM | | It would be nice to know that that meter will get you into the ball park, the same ball park :) |
| You may have to "calibrate" a calibration tool :) | KiD SmokE Jul 30, 2002 10:35 PM | | Both Meters probably will give the same result if they are calibrated correctly. After all, we're only talking about $40 SPL Meters :) |
