| OK lets have some more confusion shall we | pinetop Jul 30, 2002 3:18 PM | | What is the right way to use a R-S spl meter?
I use a camera tri pod with mine I make sure the mike is at ear level about 42 inches, stand a tad off to the side when reading the dials the mike is at a 45deg angle give or take a few deg pointed in the direction of the center channel speaker. (How do you use your meter?) |
| Do you need a tripod for a Radio Shack sound meter? | Richard Greene Jul 30, 2002 3:33 PM | | I duct tape mine to my left ear aimed at the left speaker and let the wife read the numbers.
Then I duct tape it to my right ear aimed at the right speaker and let the wife read the numbers again.
This saves money -- good tripods are expensive.
And then sometimes when I'm feeling silly,
I use the meter exactly as you do. |
| LOL but it's food for thought with the tape. n-t | pinetop Jul 30, 2002 4:21 PM | | |

Is it an expensive tripod? Does it get dual use under a camera too :) |
| OK i will give that a shot | pinetop Jul 30, 2002 5:51 PM | | and yes the tri pod gets duel use for two Olympus digital cameras a 2040 and 3030.I use them to take pics of building lots and job sites. bob d |
| OK i will give that a shot | mtrycrafts Jul 30, 2002 8:16 PM | | Then you are getting it free for the audio use :) Richard doesn't have to worry, thank goodness:) |
| Mtry i tried that method | pinetop Jul 31, 2002 3:45 AM | | Since i sit 10 ft away from my front and center speaker,i had to set the pod and meter in reverse of the front calibration method i used. The pod and meter was placed 10 feet away from the rear surrounds, aimed the meter at each surround speaker. They are calibrated within a db of one another worked out good, can't tell you what i set my sub to somebody might be watching lol bob d |
| re: OK lets have some more confusion shall we | wanderingbob Jul 31, 2002 6:20 AM | | I, too, use a camera tripod (it costs about $50 and I bought it for my Canon Rebel 2000), set it at ear level (for me) in the listening position, and point it at the speaker I'm measuring. One thing no one else mentioned is that I use "C" weighted readings. My B&K preamplifier generates "noise" by channel for these measurements.
