Need input on Toshiba vs Pioneer Elite RPTVsAVshopper

I was initialy considering Mitsu 55411 or 65411 vs
Pioneer Elite 720 (I know Pioneer is better, but $3000 better?). After further research and comparisons I am now considering a Toshiba HX model (57" or 65"). It seems to be a bit closer to Elite's performance, consider the price difference (I cat get 65" for around $2600).
I would like to know owners personal experiences with this Toshiba and what to watch out for.
1. Does this TV's prformance improve significantly with professional calibration and burn-in?
2. Has anyone had to make the same choice between Toshiba and Pioneer Elite and what influenced your decision?
3. In real life situation (appartment not store)does 57" screen produce significantly better picture than 65" (I will sit 15-16 feet away)?
4. Based on released specs or any other info out there is it worth it wating for the new Toshiba HDX82 rather than buying a current model?

Thanks.

I've worked on the insides of these beasts since they first showed up, and I can give you some facts - not mere opinions.

Many people will tell you that Pioneer makes the sets with the absolute best picture quality in the industry, to which I reply - dinosaur dung! What Pioneer actually does is spend more time setting up and adjusting their sets at the factory than anyone else ... that's all there is to the superiority issue. It's essentially non-existent, but now an absolute cult has grown around their TV sets, and just about everybody joins in the chorus. Not me. When properly setup and adjusted, I don't think that there's one person out of maybe ten thousand that could tell the two apart if only their screens were visible, and not their nameplates.

For what it's worth to you - I would NOT buy a Pioneer RPTV myself. I don't care much for their technical support or the parts policies that they pursue. It takes deep, deep pockets to maintain a Pioneer set, if and/or when it gives you trouble. I'd buy the Toshiba - no question about it - I wouldn't ponder the decision for even half a NY second.

As to the size issue - from a distance of 15-16 feet, the 65" will provide more enjoyment than a 57" every time. If you can afford it - go for that one. I don't see any advantage whatsoever in waiting for a new model to appear either. Following that course will cost you money and just might have you waiting forever and forevermore! There's always something supposedly new and wondrous just around the corner ... don't be taken in by it. Get a set today if you can and ENJOY it!

Hope this helps you

woodman is pretty much correct about PQ issues. After a pro calibrates an RPTV, most of them look pretty damn good.

But I'd throw in an issue that prevents me from liking Toshiba TVs. Discrete codes for remotes. They have none, which means you cannot easily set up macros with a remote to turn everything on, etc.

At this point I'd probably get a Mits. They've promised future support, the pros are pretty familiar with them since there are SO many out there. And the 65" comes apart (more easily) for transport up and down stairs or whatever.

What I'd WANT in that range is a Philips with 9" guns, but these are even pricier than the Elites.
