Pseudo 7.1 Surround?RUSSIA
Aug 1, 2002 9:46 AM
Can I hook up 2 different speakers into series? I am planning to put these speakers as surrounds (a pseudo 7.1 channel dealie). My receiver states that it can handle high resistance up to 16 Ohms. Both speakers are 8 Ohms. However, I have read that it is "dangerous" to hook up unlike speakers in series. If I hooked alike speakers in series for the surrounds (having 4 speakers for surround), would this create a true 7.1 atmosphere? On the other hand, is it pointless to try such a thing because there may be more problems created in the surround atmosphere (accentuation/cancellation of frequecies)? Thanks for any posts in reply in advance!

I don't know about its technical advantages as having four speakers in surround or sonic quality (I don't think it has any), but one thing I know is that hooking up two speakers in series is not a good idea. Although you are right that it raise impedance to 16 ohm, but you will starve your speakers for current resulting in sound that is thin, no bass notes and out of whack.

Not it won't. You might even make souround sound (imaging)suffer because of extar speakers in the back that wasn't meant to be there.

Kid,
Having more than two speakers in the surroundfield is okay if you primarily watch movies. With movies it is actually preferable to have more than two speakers, especially if you are talking direct radiators. Having more than two speakers creates a much more expansive soundfield, a effect that the use of dipoles tries to mimick.

Imaging is very difficult to obtain in the rear hemisphere because of reflections off the pinna which sloughs off high frequencies. High frequency information is essential in detecting direction because our ears are more sensitive to high frequencies. For example if you play a 30hz pure sinewave through a sub, you will have a tough time ascertaining the direction of the source. If you play a sinewave at 300hz, it gets much easier. At 3khz it will be easy to tell the direction of the source because this frequency lies within the ears ultra sensitive area of between 1-4khz.

This is a rule of mixing surround sound I learned in college. The front speakers carry specific directional information, the surrounds carry the depth and spaciousness(and some directional) of the soundtrack. Imaging in the rear is not supported at any phase of soundtrack creation.

Didn't you say you are against anything that is fake such as DD/DTS 6.1 matrixed (not DTS-EX discrete), or 7.1 and wasn't meant to be there? Wouldn't having two speaker from one channel will throw off surround sound protocol (120 degree to the back), especially if two speakers are not at the vicinity of
120 degree node point (one speaker might at 120 degree, but the other one might be at 140 or at 100 degree as reference to the listener)??

Or are you suggesting that as long as two speakers are at proximity of 120 degree (facing opposite direction??), they will be fine?

If the speakers are set in an array or something as in the theater. Theaters do use direct radiating speakers in an array for L/R surround. Now he(poster) can easily screw up the soundstage if he puts the speakers in a weird configuration.
I got your back Sir TT (LOL)!

I thought we only found such bladdered displays in the Cable forum (or when the subject inadvertently finds its way into this forum). I guess I was wrong! Since you've already been knighted, I guess it's too late for this regression to alter your elevated status (but we know at least you're trying!) in society!

you might try using a multi channel amp in your receivers surround pre-outs or try Parasound cse6.1, either way it will not be a true 7.1 if your receiver does not have the processing for that
cool, thanks a lot! -ntRUSSIA
