Denon 3802 pre-outs downmixing 5.1 to 2.0Dr_Bass

I wanted to record some music I had from various DVD's onto CDR's and minidisc so I could listen to them on my truck system. I found out that the 3802 does a nice job of down mixing 5.1 to 2.0 to the preout's. I choose the 5.1 soundtrack from the DVD and select "direct" mode on the receiver and as verified with my video essentials DVD I get all 6 channels, nicely mixed down to 2 and sent out to both the main left/right and the fixed level output (except in DTS mode, will not send anything to the fixed level output, you must use the main left/right output in DTS mode for some reason which is a shame because i don't like to get the volume control in the signal path). And another nice touch is even in direct mode you can still trim the LFE channel (which is a must on Eagles Hell Freezes over). But you can't use cinema eq which some DVD's need if they where originaly motion pictures (like U2, Rattle and Hum really needs cinema eq) so what i did what put the receiver in surround mode, set the center, surrounds, subwoofer, to the "none" setting and the receiver mixed all 6 channels down to 2 channels and I had my cinema eq in place.

I also tried to use the analog output's from my DVD player but I only get PCM output even if 5.1 sound is selected from DVD menu. As verified by Video Essentials DVD the surrounds are mono and the LFE is dropped all together. I don't know if all DVD players do this but I was kind of surprised to get this from a nice Sony player.

Listening to these recording's on the road is great. So much better than listening to the cd versions. The LFE add's a nice touch if you got the subs to handle it (I got 3 10" JL's in my pick up) the bass comming from "Bad" and "Where The Streets Have No Name" off the U2 Rattle and Hum DVD was a religous expierience.

Anyway, it's nice to know that with the Denon, you don't loose anything when listening to 5.1 DVD's in stereo mode.

Output from analog output is DPL, not PCM (DD mode).KiD SmokE

Hey Dr

You only get PCM out of analog output if you choose PCM option. If you choose DD audio option from DVD player, you will get Dolby Pro Logic (by default) out of DVD player's analog out (which was confirm by your Video Essentials DVD...L/R/C/Mon-Suround). If you choose DTS or PCM options, then you will only get "stereo" output out of analog output :)
Your right, I guess it was wishfull thinkingDr_Bass

Your right, I guess it was wishfull thinking that I forgot about dolby digital 2.0.

Also I forgot to mention 2 other DVD's that came out nice as well, Roy Orbison Black and White (DTS) and Steely Dan's Two Against Nature (DTS).
