Help: bass response from Denon / Marantz receiversniraj

I currently have the ancient HK AVR20MKII (still love it) and have tried to upgrade to a Dolby Digital / DTS receiver.

However my attempts to replace with that Marantz SR 7000 (last year) and the Denon AVR 2802 (this year) failed as I noticed that the bass response in the new ones is considerably muted as compared to my old HK.

Ofcourse, an initial assumption would be that it is the old HK's response that is at fault (since the new, more expensive receivers should be using more expensive DACs, etc.

However, I notice the bass from my HK is more comparable to what I hear in live performances in Jazz clubs here in NYC. Though I think that the midrange performance of Denon / Marantz is better. I think that the bass problem is due to over-filtering the noise in an attempt to make the response super-clear.

Or, could this be because my twin subwoofers have fixed 80 Hz crossovers and the LFE outputs of Denon / Marantz have already been filtered once (in other words, the impedance in the receiver's low pass filters IN CONJUNCTION with that of the subwoofer impairs performance because of possibly different design?

Should I take a full freq response pre-out from the receiver and pass it to the subwoofer instead? If so how (each subwoofer has only one input plug rather than a pair of plugs).

Thanks in advance for your inputs / suggestions.

Forgot to mention in the previous post that I heard Bryston separates at a local store with a great bass response. But I'm really looking for a sub $1000 receiver with 5.1 channels of amplification.
