| Home Theater Set-up | Berean Oct 20, 2002 7:05 PM | | I'm pretty new to this, so I have some questions that may seem simple to someone with more experience.
I recently upgraded my almost 20-year old Technics stereo to a home theater.
I have a Kenwood VR-6070 receiver with Infinity HTS-20 speakers.
Although it sounds real good for movies, I listen to a lot of hardcore classical music on it as well, and I coudn't help feeling like something was missing. I replaced the fronts with my old Technics floor speakers and found what was missing. Toccata and Fugue in d rattles my ribs and shakes the walls.
My receiver has both "A" and "B" front speaker outputs. I don't mean room B; It has that as well, but I understand what that's about.
So here's my question - I have the B front outputs and my two leftover Infinity speakers going to waste. Would it hurt anything to hook them up? Would it cause a sound field problem, or maybe an impedence mismatch? Or is more really merrier?
I welcome any knowledgable input.
Thank you, Berean (cminer@datasync.com) |

I'm not famaliar with the 6070 and Kenwood, IMHO is one of the beefier receivers not utilizing discrete outputs, but it's not usually a good idea to have two pairs of fronts playing at the same time, especially in any of the surround modes. Although each of the 5/6 channels are disctete amplifiers, they are probably driven from the same power supply and the low impedance of the front paralleled channels may draw more current than the receiver can handle safely. Since neither of my receivers provide Pro Logic II processing, I find it very difficult to listen to music in any of the DSP modes. I find turning off the effects provides the best setting for music, except for maybe the Denon's 5-channel stereo, which I use sparingly. If you really enjoy "Toccata and Fugue in D", especially enjoyable this time of year, listen with the effects off and I don't think you would have a problem using both pairs of fronts. Just my 2 ohms, I mean my 2 cents. |

You have a set of (five?) Infinity speakers. Does it come with a subwoofer? And you have a pair of Technics speaker that you want to use for music.
It's easy. Hook them all up. When you watch movies, switch the front speakers to use the Infinities, so you won't have a mismatch in tone/timbre across the soundfields. When you listen to two-channel music, switch to the Technics. Just don't use both at the same time.
