| What to buy first? Need your opinions. | sunburnt_curt Oct 21, 2002 9:06 AM | | I've got about 3k to spend. Current setup is: Marantz SR880 receiver, Linn Tukan fronts, Linn Kan center, B&W CM65 Rears, Velodyne sub (about 6yrs old), and Mitsubishi 36" tube.
Should I use the 3K to buy a new sub and center channel (probably a REL Strata sub and a Linn center), or a 65" rear projection HDTV (probably a Toshiba).
Note: I won't have an HDTV receiver for a while, regardless of which way I go. |

Going from a 36" to a 65" TV would definitely have a big impact.
What are your thoughts on the speaker side? Is it a problem with center channel tonal mismatch and insufficient SPLs with the Velodyne? |

That's what will give you the biggest noticable difference right away. Personally, I think your center and sub are fine. Sure, you can always benefit from better, but why not get the nice large tv set.
BTW - My uncle recently purchased a Mitsu Platinum + series INTEGRATED HDTV 55" for only $2500. So for that price, you really can't go wrong. It's just the previous models being cleared out right now, so it's a great deal.
You could take the extra $1000, buy an SVS subwoofer which would leave the REL in the dust! |

What started all this is that I'm building a house, and needed dimensions on a TV for the built-ins. So I went with a 65". The house will be done in March, and by then the prices on a 65" Toshiba or Mitsu will be under 3,000.
The room I'm putting all this in is significantly larger than the current room, so it started me thinking about upgrades to my system, with the Sub and Center being the first to get upgraded.
Which leads me to the original question. The feedback I've got so far from everyone I've asked is go for the TV. That's great for the home theater aspect, but I do listen to a lot of music - thus the Linns and the Marantz receiver (which is one of the better AV receivers at producing 2-channel audio). My thoughts on the REL are that it'd be a good complimaent to the Linns & Marantz; much moreso than the Velodyne.
Who knows - by March maybe I can scrape enough together to buy everything at once.... |

BTW - I have a Velodyne HGS-12 that is EXCELLENT, would probably make a great match for your Linns, but the money would probably be better spent towards an SVS. I just didn't know enough when I made the purchase. |
