what is bi-wiring? Also 2 Subs?caddyman

I have heard about this. But not sure what it is or what the benefit is. I notice that by speakers have two sets of connects.

Also I am thinking of adding a second powered sub. How does this work with just one sub out on the receiver?

*Bi-wiring: connecting both sides of a passive crossover network directly to the amplifier using separate connections.
Purportedly, this can improve amplifier damping of the back voltage(back-EMF) from the woofers before it can modulate the crossover to the midrange/tweeter.
The audible benefits are subtle, and probably impossible to detect in a double-blind test.

BTW, Audio Physic makes high-end loudspeakers, and they insist that bi-wiring can cause more problems than it solves.
In any event, it is highly doubtful that any commonly available AV reveiver will have Bi-wire terminals, or the really beefy power amplifier needed to benefit from it.
Bi-wiring is mostly the domain of high-end separates systems; it's basically a tweak for audiophiles that need to feel that they are extracting every bit of performance from their system.

*Adding a second subwoofer to a single LFE output: Simple; get a Y-connector at Radioshack to split the signal.
They cost about $4.00

Almost right.

Biwiring has the same connections at the amp as a non-biwired setup. The extra connections are at the speaker, so any receiver can do this.

If you're an adventurous sort, you might try borrowing a set of biwired cables to decide for yourself how it sounds in your system. Be warned, however, that any post involving cables is controversal. Questions on this subject frequently generate long discourses and passionate opinions.

As for me, well, I like trying stuff and deciding for myself what sounds good. :-)

Since both terminals of bi-wire speaker (High and low) are connected to a single node to the amplifier, then both wires are equivalent electronically thus no benefit :)

I am already having trouble hiding one par of speaker wire, and here comes another pair....as Woodman would say FORGITBOUTIT :)

bi-wiring is not a myth, I use it every single day. The benefits are noticeable, but usually in high end systems.

b The benefits are noticeable, but usually in high end systems.

Well, that is yet to be demonstrated, so this part is the myth.

Only one way Bi-wiring will be beneficial...KiD SmokE

....and that would be if Amp is also bi-wirable.

Once the bi-wires coming from speakers touch each other at the common Amp's speaker output (on non bi-wirable Amp), then the most important aspect of biwiring is thrown out the window (separation of low and high frequency). Once that improvement is out of the picture, then the only thing left for us is hearsay and myth about bi-wiring that don't have any solid foot holding scientifically, and that is where imagination start running wild :)

The claims made for it is a myth:) Buy wiring is for real :)

You and i know you will not hear a difference unless you use high end speaker cables. Don't expect to hear a difference with plain jane 16ga wire, the more you spend for speaker cables the better the sound. Don't you know that by now? bob d

it worked for me...GM

after 2.5 years of normal connections, i bi-wired my powered speakers and noticed an improvement in the high freq. mainly the imagining defintely improved...in stereo or direct mode i swear the center speaker is active (the towers are 14' apart). It could be my room, speakers or a combination, but there is noticable difference with my setup.

Lots of approaches, and not necessarily expensive. I biwire my speakers, and think the differences are relatively minor. It's not a big deal, but then again biwiring's not all that expensive either, whether using bulk cables or biwires. If you want to try it out, go for it.

My local speaker dealer's also a skeptic on biwiring. Among the speaker lines that they carry, Paradigm recommends biwiring, while Dunlavy does not. In their showroom, they use short (about 6") low gauge cables with spades to replace the factory-installed jumpers. Again, that's a relatively low cost switch out to try as well.

Of course, for what a set of biwires or short cables with spades cost, you can get a box of acoustic ceiling panels. At $16 for a box of eight (can buy them at a hardware or building materials store), those panels gave my system a very noticeable improvement in sound quality, and an astonishing upgrade in the imaging. They're awkward and can be quite ugly, but the results speak for themselves. I would easily address the room acoustics before worrying about biwiring or adding a second sub.
