| Paradigm Servo 15 and Over Heating | bisk Oct 21, 2002 11:23 AM | | I was listening to music the other day and my Sub just shut off. I felt the heat sink at it was VERY hot, so I am assuming that it shut off due to too much heat. Has anyone else experienced this and is there something that I can do to prevent this? |
| re: Paradigm Servo 15 and Over Heating | snickelfritz Oct 21, 2002 12:11 PM | | What is the volume control setting on the back of the sub, and on the X-20/30 module?
I keep the subwoofer volume at the halfway point, and the X-30 level at -58.
The sub never gets hot, even if I push my system fairly hard. |
| re: Paradigm Servo 15 and Over Heating | bisk Oct 22, 2002 5:47 AM | | I'm not using the x20/30. I have the Sub Out on my Denon 2802 connected directly to the back of the Sub. The volume was at about 3/4.
Would if be possible to mount fans (possible PC ones and have them only spinning when the unit is powered on) on the Heat Synch? |
| re: Paradigm Servo 15 and Over Heating | snickelfritz Oct 22, 2002 9:40 AM | | I think you are running your Servo-15 at higher levels than I am, which might explain why yours overheats and mine runs fairly cool.
BTW, what are you using for main speakers?
My B&W CDM 9NT's are fairly sensitive(90db/w/m) and the Servo-15 still doesn't break a sweat trying to keep up.
The fan idea sounds plausible; CPU fans work very effectively by drawing heated air away from a metal heatsink.
I think you'd need at least two 120mm fans, and you might be able to obtain a temperature sensor to kick them on when the heatsink gets hot. |
| re: Paradigm Servo 15 and Over Heating | bisk Oct 22, 2002 10:35 AM | | I am using B&W DM305s for the front and rears, B&W LCR3 for the centre and B&W CC3 for rear centre. |
| Another silly question... | snickelfritz Oct 23, 2002 9:49 AM | | Why are you not using the X-30 controller?
I was under the distinct impression that the X-30 is an integral part of the overall design.
ie: the only control on the back of a Servo-15 is a level control; no phase, lowpass or highpass functions.
BTW, you might want to get a Radioshack SPL meter and a test CD, and set the level of the Servo-15 to closely match that of your main speakers at the listening position.
At 3/4 volume on the Servo-15 and those speakers, I suspect the deep bass is probably at least 10db louder than the signal at 1khz.
ie: you're overdriving the sub; keep the volume control near 12:00. |
| Another silly question... | bisk Oct 24, 2002 7:07 AM | | I was told my the salesman that I didn't require an X20/30 since I was using the Sub Out on my Receiver. I figured that must be true as if I did need it he would have told me that I did so that he would get more commission. I will try turning the volume to 12:00 and see what happends.
Thank you |
| Another silly question... | Blue Meanie Oct 24, 2002 5:38 PM | | Your salesman was correct. If you are using the LFE/Sub out on your receiver, you have no need for the x20 or x30. The receiver takes care of the crossover point in that case.
I, on the other hand, use the x30 even though I use the LFE/Sub out on my receiver. I just turn the crossover level all the way up (on the x30) so as not to interfere with receiver LFE/Sub crossover. I just like having the volume control of the x30 handy to lower the sub volume a bit for music listening (saves me the trouble of reaching for the control on the Servo-15). Another reason why someone might want to Hook up the x30 even when using the receiver's LFE/Sub out would be the phase control on the x30. Also, unless Paradigm has changed it's policy, the x20 or x30 (your choice) is supposed to be included in the price of the Servo-15. Although if the salesman subtracted $150 from the price of your sub for not including the x20/x30, then that would be fair. By the way, how do you guys like your Servo-15s? I absolutely love mine. Back when I got mine, HSU was relatively unknown, and SVS didn't even exist yet (as far as I know). So my best options were Velodyne and Paradigm, as far as I was concerned. Compared the Velo HGS-15 and the Servo-15. In my opinion, the Servo-15 was every bit the equal of the Velo, and was significantly cheaper. What other choices did you guys consider besides the Servo-15?
