| Denon AVR 3300 | caddyman Oct 22, 2002 8:27 AM | | Back in 1999 I was building my first system and through many posts on this site I decided on the AVR 3300. It was a very hot receiver then and highly acclaimed. I was interested in hearing feedback from anyone else who bought the 3300, do you like it, and problems? Have any tweaking tips? |

Due to it's perfect performance, it made me buy a Denon AVR4800 and my brother purchased a Denon AVR4802. The cooling fan can be a little bit loud at times and I know there is a fix for it, but for me, if it's not broken, they why fix it? It has always performed without even a minor glitch! |
| re: Denon AVR 3300 | BQ Oct 22, 2002 10:05 AM | | My AVR-3300 broke down due to failure of a cold solder joint. The local high-end vendor where I bought this unit did the repairs, and their opinion is that this was a manufacturing defect. Denon's position so far has been: you're out of warranty, so your out of luck. Based on this and other comments I've seen posted here, I have concerns about the quality of Denon products.
I've never had any of the cooling fan issues reported. My unit runs warm, but never hot. Maybe my speaker efficiency presents an easier load.
#1 Tweak: The remote that came with it is awful. I found a good after market remote at www.remotecentral.com, and now the Denon remote lives in a junk drawer.
The sound is usually very good. DTS can be a bit edgy, but that may be an issue with source material.
Would I buy this product again, given my experience with it? No. The quality issues, and their position in dealing with manufacturing defects, make Denon products undesirable. |
| Still my centerpiece! | Keith from Canada Oct 22, 2002 10:11 AM | | I've owned it for several years now and it's been nothing but great for me. I definitely have zero regrets going with this product! |
| It's a gem | Jim Clark Oct 22, 2002 10:39 AM | | Simply a great receiver, save for the remote. I just bought a RS univeral remote as a replacement so that fixed up that problem quickly and inexpensively.
Yes the unit ran hot.
Never even heard the fan come on, am not sure it ever did.
A lightning bolt that hit the house fried the unit, despite the surge protector, just this past summer. Replaced with a 3802 after comparing it to similar receivers. While I am very happy with this unit, I wish I still had the 3300. My plan was to add a five channel amp to the 3300 in a first step toward seperates. Now, for a variety of silly reasons, I'm going to have to postpone that move for a while.
Just so you know, I regretted not having DPLII. I can assure you that it's nice but not worth upgrading for. Unless you have plans to make a substantial move up, hang on to the 3300.

| re: Denon AVR 3300 | Flanders Oct 22, 2002 3:46 PM | | Mine works like a champ. The sound is incredible. No tweaks really needed - I even use the direct mode for my CD player.
There are a couple of things I would like in the receiver. First, I would give it one or two additional digital coax inputs (only comes with one coax, but 3 Toslink/optical). Second, I wish you could use speaker B to power multi-room speakers. From my experience, you can only use it as a secondary surround sound setup.
For my next generation receiver, it would also be nice if it had built-in DVD-Audio decoding - that way I wouldn't have to deal with running six more cables to my receiver. Of course, I would only want DVD-Audio if it becomes the next standard in audio.
As far as the remote goes, I'm pretty happy with it. It doesn't work well with the TV though - I can't use the remot to jump straight to a TV channel - I have to use the up and down channel buttons. That's a major drag. |
| re: Denon AVR 3300 | kfalls Oct 22, 2002 8:19 PM | | I have had the 3300 for several years and still love it. I was/am still a big yammy fan, owning several pieces in the past and currently have the 2095 in my bedroom system. The Denon is in my main system because I feel it sounds better, more detailed, better imaging and projects into the room where the 2095 sounded less three dimensional. I experienced the problem with the fan. Denon touted its load-dependent variable speed as an enhancement, but mine would ramp-up to a high-pitched squeal and stay there. There was a fix and even though it was out of warranty Denon made the repair free of cost. I would like to have the 5803, but can't justify replacing a perfectly good receiver. |
