|   Why does Dolby PLII only play sound through center channel? | rpgamer
Oct 22, 2002 7:58 PM | | When I watch cable TV the audio only comes through the center channel. I have the coax cable plugged into the VCR and the RCA L/R audio cable running out of the VCR and into the receiver's VCR analog input plugs. The analog video runs out of the VCR and into the TV. Problem is: when I watch TV in DPLII mode the sound is only transmitted through the center channel (on a 5 speaker setup). I can get it to work in 5-channel stereo mode, but I'd prefer to watch it in DPLII. Any theories? |

Oct 22, 2002 8:26 PM | | P.S. - It works fine when watching DVDs (I tested it in DPLII just to see if it worked - it did. I also works when playing CDs (on the DVD player). Its just the TV and VHS movies (so basically anything outputting from the VCR) that refuses to play in full DPLII. |

But I get great effects from watching video tapes from the VCR. But you also said VCR movies as well. hmmm, try using the red and white output from the VCR and unplug the coax and see if it helps. Just a thought.

Oct 22, 2002 10:56 PM | | ah wait, i think i was wrong. the L-R line out will not work if the in source is coax in most VCR's. so try a VHS movie using the L-R and see if u get effects. I get great effects from batman and true lies on VHS.

Oct 22, 2002 10:01 PM | | It's normal with mono source. DPL and DPLII compares the two channels and direct the identical source to the center speakers.
Many cable channels are in mono. You should be able to get surround sound with network primetime shows.
