Denon ReceiversNeed Help

Is the Denon 3803 going to be THAT MUCH BETTER than the Denon 1803? The only significant difference that I can see is the 30 extra watts being provided by the Denon 3803. Do those 30 watts really justify the difference in price?

See if the 1803 has the important features you want. They may include (but not neccessarily):

RCA Pre-outs
6.1 processing
type of chips (Sharc, Burr Brown?)
On Screen Menu
Front A/V inputs
A good remote
etc...

I don't see the power alone being enough incentive to purchase the 3803, but it depends. If you have speakers that are hard to drive, then it will make some difference. Otherwise, if they have pretty good sensitivity, the power diff won't be noticable.

Do you know what brand of chips are in the 1800? What difference do they make? Can noise be affected by the type of chip used?

Unfortunately, I don't know. However, you can go to the denon website, and they have each reciever listed and you can see the specs. Also, the Denon recievers (or at least they used to) place the label of their chips etc on the faceplate of the reciever.

The 1802 at least used a 24-bit Crystal processor (pretty generic -- Onkyo, Kenwood, and Pioneer's entry level models I believe use the same one), and I believe Analog Devices 96/24 DACs.
midfi, I'll add to your list..._Luke_

the multi-room/multi-source feature of the 38 Series. It was one of the deciding factors for me.
