| Quick Help Needed!!!!!!! | mikefjohnson Oct 24, 2002 8:10 AM | | I am looking at both the Yamaha RX V730 and the Denon AVR 1803, and they both retail for 799.99 Canadian. The Denon offers DTS-ES for true discrete 6.1, whereas the Yamaha dosen't. The Yamaha has an on-screen display, but that isn't important to me. Any advice you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated. |

| quick question for you! | MikeF Oct 24, 2002 12:55 PM | | Where did you find the RXV730 for $800 retail . . . where I am the RXV630 (or the HTR5560 equivalent) is $800 and the Denon 1803 is closer to $900 (although I can get it for about $800 at a local shop).
One other thing to think about is that the Denon doesn't have a full set of preamplifier outputs whereas the Yamaha has 6.1 pre-outs (if you ever wanted to add a larger power amp). This may or may not be an issue for you. Also, the Denon does have multizone capability while the Yamaha does not.
I am curious as to what store you got the prices from as I am very close to buying the Denon as part of a package with Paradigm Monitor speakers. Anyhow, I don't think you can lose either way . . . |

| quick answer | MikeF Oct 24, 2002 1:48 PM | | At a local hifi shop in Edmonton (Audio Ark). I'm pretty sure A&B Sound will also sell it for around that price too; they seem to mark everything at MSRP to allow themselves more room for dealing or for sales promotions.
As for speakers, what I am have under consideration are the Mini Monitors up front, CC370 for the centre channel, ADP170 for surrounds, and the PDR10 to take care of the bass. Since I live in an apartment I certainly don't need anything to shake the house down . . . but that said, I think the above system sounds quite good. If only I found it easy to part with my cash I'd have the system by now . . . |
| My 2 cents... | Bowmah Oct 24, 2002 3:35 PM | | Good center channel choice! I would re-consider your dipole choice. Paradigm pushes these for HT but they suck for music. I actually, like monopoles in the rears for HT. Atoms are a good choice in my mind. I would also suggest looking at the Mon 3's. They are very similar to the Mon 9's (both have 8 inch drivers). What I have also learned apart from spending most of the money in a godo center is a good sub. I hate to ask you to spend more money but the PS-1000 gives great effects for HT. So to recap, compare this setup to yours and see if it suits your budget:
cc370, Mon 3's, Atoms and PS-1000. I say PS-1000 over the PDR-10 (my friend has the PDR-10 and I have the PS-1000), big difference in theatrical effects (explosions and rumbling). Neither will provide too much room shaking, you will need the Servo-15 for that.
I don't work for Paradigm, I just like their stuff. And they should pay me a commission for all the sales I have given them from my referrals over the years! :)

| My 2 cents... | MikeF Oct 25, 2002 10:09 AM | | I do have the PS-1000 under consideration as well, but it's another $200-250 . . . I suppose it's only money, and what's money if not for spendin' :) . . . I have to go back to the store one of these days to give both subs a serious listen to.
I realize that the dipoles are not well received for music, but then again, I like my 2 channel music played through 2 channels. I don't forsee myself buying a DVD-Audio or SACD player anytime soon so the above set-up would be primarily for home theatre. That said, I should also audition direct radiators for rear surrounds to compare the soundfield that they produce versus the dipoles.
One of these years I'll finally make up my mind!! :)
Thanks for your input! |
| quick question for you! | mikefjohnson Oct 25, 2002 3:12 AM | | The RXV730 is on sale for $800 at 2001 audio video in London, but because it is a chain there is probably one close enough to where you are. The guy at 2001 told me he would give it to me for $750 because I was looking at a speaker package too, when I went down the road to another shop (Power Station) the sales guy there said he would match the $750 price on the Yamaha or give me the Denon for the $750. Hope this helps. |
| quick question for you! | MikeF Oct 25, 2002 10:12 AM | | The new A&B Sound flyer came out today and guess what is on sale - the RXV730 for $797. Not a bad sale considering they have the regular list price at $1000.
Have you decide which receiver you are going with?? |
| quick question for you! | mikefjohnson Oct 28, 2002 3:37 AM | | Oddly enough I didn't go with either. I went to one last shop in London to see there price on the Denon and I ended up buying a Marantz SR5300. The list price was $800, but because I bought some speakers as well, I got it for $675. I originally wanted a Marantz, but I didn't think I could afford one with all the features I wanted. |
