Bookshelf vs Floorstanding...I'm a believerTennabrae

I have always owned floorstanding speakers because I thought bookshelves where a comparamise. Well, I got a pair of Yamaha NS-A60X bookshelf speakers and I am very impressed with these speakers. The speakers I had before these were some KLH floorstanding (model 9915, purchased back in '96) The bookshelves are much clearer sounding and are better for music, where as the KLH have better bass extension so I prefer those for HT since I don't have a sub.
I was just writting this because I never even considered bookshelf speakers as an option but now I am sold on them and its great that they take up so much less space.

If there is any doubt left, go listen to one of the following pairs of bookshelves, and hold on to your pants. You'll be blown away by their performance!

Paradigm Studio 20s V2
Vienna Acoustics Hadyn
Sonus Faber Concertinos
Klipsch RB5s
Boston Acoustics M60s

The Onix Rocket RS250. The most unbeliveable sounding speaker I have ever heard. You will go through your entire music collection to hear what the recordings are supposed to sound like.

Some magazing did a review on the Onix Rocket towers, which retail i think for $1399. He said they sound just as good the $150,000 pair of Dynaudio speakers he had. The whole line is impressive. Not many people know about them though. I'm saving my pennies, and one day they will be mine.
PSB Image 2B vs Audio Concepts Sapphire IIVW Golfer

I had to switch my ACI floor standing speakers for my PSB Image 2B's, and damn, I am suprised these $800 speakers hold their own against a pair of $1500 Kit speakers! I am powering them with a Denon 1802, and both pairs sound sweet, with very clear stero reproduction on both Audio and DVD applications.

A HUGE difference from the cheap Sony amp and 1970's Sansui Speakers I was running only three months ago.
Tower speaker performance in a bookshelf case?Night Wolf

I also used to be set on towers, i love the size, i had KLH 9912's (small brother to your 9915's) then the JBL ND310 (at the time, i thought the dual woofer thing was really cool, actualy i still do, but not to the degree) the Yamaha i am sure is a better speaker then the 9915, you shouldn't decided tower vs. bookshelf from that single comparison.

after I listed to my KLH 17's (BTW if your not familer, they are vintage, made in 69, 2-way 10" woofer, and cross at 1.5khz) I also had my doubts on 2-way's, i never liked the idea of them. that all changed when i listened to my 17's (now they are mains in cheap HT system, but I will always have those speakers)

now, to the subject of my thread, my JBL L100's have the response, and performance oh very good towers, they go down to 27hz, they were designed after studio monitors (which then became the best monitor at the time, and very, very popular) so they had to have awesome bass, great, full sound, but in a realitivly small enclouser, and boy oh boy did JBL do one hell of a job. (I would go on and on about them, but then everyone here would get pissed at me since i mention them so much :D )

so the conclusion is, I have nothing against 2-way systems, and in lower priced speakers, I'd choose a 2-way DIY over a 3-way something, get better drivers for the 2-way. I actualy prefer 2-way over 3-way now, (sometimes though) as my 17's have a great bass response consideriding what they are (one of the first acoustic suspension speakers)

I would not choose a speaker based on tower vs. bookshelf or 2-way vs. 3-way alone, I know before I got my L100's I was set on the Klipsch RF-3II, and heard theya re very good, and good bass, but then I heard about the L100's, and after hearing tons of thing about them (being vintage really helped :) ) i went for them, and never, ever regret it.
I have been on that path for over a decadespacedeckman

Haven't been too tempted to turn back either. Every once in a while, but then I turn my system back on and its all over.
