| Projection TV standards? Samsung HCL4715W | KenY Oct 25, 2002 4:29 PM | | Okay, I just went to check out a Samsung HCL4715W and I have a couple of questions:
1) Is it normal when viewing a 4:3 signal on a 16:9 TV that the picture is surrounded on the left and right by LIGHT GREY bars? It looks terrible...I would much prefer to see black bars or something not so bright.
2) Will I regret it if I get this TV (with a 47" 16:9 screen) and end up sitting about 7 feet away from it when I'm watching it? Is that too close?
By the way, does anyone here know anything about this TV, or whether it's a good buy or not?
TIA,
Ken Y. |

Almost all 16:9 TV's have a stretch mode for 4:3 programming, which depending on how the manufacturer of the TV goes about it has varying results. This will fill the screen entirely but will obviously affect the real life geometry of the image. It will not be so noticable on a normal image, but if text is scrolling across the screen like on CNN you will find the letters stretch in places and not in others. And square shapes become stretched to oblong shapes. So watching pool on TV might not be such a good idea. 16:9 programming is well accomadated, so buying the TV should not pose too much of a problem even now, let alone in the future.
I do not know anything about the TV. Have you checked the reviews on this very site? |
