I recently posted about my dilemma regarding whether to buy a DVD player or get a newer receiver with Dolby PL II so I could better enjoy my digital cable movies and music channels. In spite of being advised to get a DVD player, I went with my gut feeling and acquired a Denon AVR1603 receiver. I notice a real sense of improvement in spaciousness and clarity with movies over the old DPL format and I love the five-channel stereo effect on digital music channels and CDs. I'll probably buy a DVD player later this year but for now I am happy with my decision. Dolby Digital sound may be better yet, but for now PL II sounds great to me. Anyone own the 1603? Opinions on it? Thanks in advance.
Try a DTS disc on it...jeskibuff

OK, so you didn't get a DVD player, so aren't enjoying true 5.1 sound. Blow $18 on a DTS disc and see what you think about discrete channels. I'd recommend Steely Dan's Gaucho or Sting's Brand New Day. I think you'll get a nice eye opener and get a nice treat for your ears.

BestBuy.com has most DTS discs priced at $24.99, but my local B&M store usually has them from $17.99 to $19.99.

I also have the 1603 and loving evry minute of it. I would suggest listening to music in 2 channel Direct to see if you enjoy it better? I find that I still prefer 2 channel versus the 5 channel stereo for clarity and "cleanliness" of the sound/instruments.

Save up and get a DVD player. A low cost one with DTS will do. Then rent gladiator and saving private Ryan (DTS version). You will never look back!

Enjoy the new gear!
