| Marantz RC 5200, Phillips Pronto or Sony AV 3000? | Greg922 Jan 7, 2003 7:52 PM | | Any thoughts on universal remotes and ease of use and set-up would be greatly appreciated. Best place to buy online?
Thanks,

| A couple of thoughts | BQ Jan 7, 2003 8:33 PM | | IMO, remote preference is a very personal thing. http://www.remotecentral.com/ reviews a lot of remotes, and it may be a useful resource for you. They talk about setup issues there, too. Also, be sure to check out specific remote reviews on this site.
Your posting subject seems to indicate that you're leaning toward LCD. They're versatile and they look cool, but you always had to look at the remote to use it. That means you have to look away from the action on the screen to, say, adjust the volume. By contrast, the all button remotes aren't as flexible, though some are pretty good.
I use the Sony RM-VL900. It's all buttons, and reasonably well laid out. Got it from www.etronics.com for about $40. They also have the RM-AV3000 for $110, the Philips Pronto for $230, and lots of other remotes. I've ordered from them a few times with no problems. |

and did look at some of the lcd models but youright the convenience comes from some button controls and being able to hold the whole thing in one hand-the rc 2000 was great
but heavy and burns batteries like crazy-i have been thinking of the rm-vl900 did you have any problems programing it and do the batteries hold up well

Some devices were simple to program -- pick a code & go. Others were a hassle, but programmable. It covers 99% of what I do on a daily basis. For that last 1%, alas, it's necessary to get the original mfg remote. That doesn't happen too often, though.
Overall, I still happy with it and have no plans to upgrade to something else yet. |
