NAD vs. Rotelbuffalocharlie
Jan 8, 2003 8:11 AM
I have narrowed my search for a AV receiver to 2: the NAD T762 (not yet available) and the Rotel RSX-1055. They both can be had for about $1100, and both list for $1399.

I am just as concerned, probably more so, with stereo listening as DVD 5.1 surround. I want the upgradeablility of DD-EX and DTS-ES, but will not be running more than 5.1 speakers anytime soon...

Both brands have their loyal fans and detractors as well, I am bothered that the Rotel has no AV inputs on the front panel, or headphone jack (minor concerns, though), and their remote is not nearly as user-friendly.

I have listened to both,(NAD's T752, actually) at separate retailers, so I can't directly compare sound, but ultimate sound quality is my foremost concern.

Any opinions are welcome, as I will be making my decision soon....if NAD T762 ever gets here!

I have heard so much good stuff about Rotel and absolutly no bad stuff, that I am picking up a Rotel RMB-1095 at the end of this month. I also like the looks of Rotel also.
I don't know much about NAD, but I am sure you will make a good choice for yourself.
I wouldn't buy either oneNorm Strong

They're both overpriced. I wouldn't buy the Rotel in any event because it doesn't have a headphone jack. What is it that would make you spend $1100 for these receivers when excellent ones are available for $300 (and that's WITH headphone jack.)

I personally can't think of a $300 receiver on the market that would compare (at all!) with either Nad or Rotel in the +$1K range. If such a receiver exists, I would LOVE to know about it!
Head Phone jacks are 'Normally' found on the PreAmp...Biohazzard

It may well take forever for the T762 to arrive, thus it may be impossible to compare the two. I'm a big fan of NAD, and indeed bought a T752 a few months ago, selecting it over offerings from Marantz and Denon.

Very pleased with the sound of the NAD, but in that price range, Rotel was unavailable, so I never compared them. My only problem with the NAD is an overaggressive and very noisy cooling fan. If you haven't already, you might also consider Arcam, as they make some fine sounding recievers as well.

One option for comparing the two frontrunners (if the NAD ever becomes available) is to simply ask if you can sign out/ borrow the demo from one store and take it to the other (or borrow both and take them home). You would be suprised at how many shops let you do this. Alternately, you could buy one (assuming the store has a reasonable return policy) and take it to the other store to compare. This is what I did.
