| So Nick, did Pioneer 811S made the grade or not ?? | Smokey Jan 8, 2003 1:15 PM | | I did noted that you said for its class ($240) it is a good choice, but what about overall performance?
I was specifically wondering how it would compete with receivers that have the same price range such as Panasonic SA100, and Kenwood-or Sony for that matter, since CosumerReport rate the performance of Pioneer receiver below Panasonic and Kenwood.
Thanks. |
| It most defintely did..... | nick4433 Jan 8, 2003 3:38 PM | | I was amazed that the 811S sounded so decent given it's price. Whle comparing receivers, you have to keep in mind the price of the receiver. I have not heard the Kenwood or the Panasonic but I am sure they are pretty decent too. The Pioneer when compared to the 4ES did lacked in mids and the highs seemed harsher but overall it did just fine.
Smokey to tell you the truth, I really haven't heard a crappy receiver yet in whatever little I've heard so far. Just because some of us don't like a particular kind of sound does not make it crappy in my book. Most receivers have certain tonal characteristics that make them sound different than the other. To say one receiver brand sounds "different" than the other is OK but to say it sounds "crappy" is not OK just because we don't like it. |
| So you are saying that Sony sound better Pioneer. | Smokey Jan 8, 2003 5:55 PM | | I didn't want to put words in you mouth, but you did say that Pioneer did lacks in mid, and highs sound harsher than Sony 4ES. Harsher of highs might be due to excessive THD% value when an amp is over driven. Pioneer just might put out less "real" power in surround mode than Sony (just speculation).
But as you said, one shouldn't expect too much for $250 receiver :)
Thanks. |
| So you are saying that Sony sound better Pioneer. | nick4433 Jan 8, 2003 7:51 PM | | Smokey, I was playing the Pioneer thru my amps so the 811Ss amp could not have been overdriven. Upon listening to the 811S over a duration of time, I'd have to say that IMHO, the 4ES sounded better than the 811S. |
| You finally came clean :) | Smokey Jan 8, 2003 8:05 PM | | You could've said that from the beginning and saved AR some bandwidth....<img src="http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif">
