| Copying DVDs | gillsev Jan 8, 2003 5:10 PM | | I have a Panasonic DMR E30 DVD player/recorder that I use mainly for copying VHS or PPV movies into DVD-R. I have to use this black box (with 9 Volt battery in it) if recordings are coming from VHS tapes that have the Macrovision Anticopy in them. They're all coming out clear on DVD-R. I also have another DVD player (Pioneer DV 47Ai) that I use mainly for playing. I tried to copy a DVD movie from it to my Panasonic, but I get a prompt on my TV screen: Recording Not Allowed. I don't get that prompt when I record from VHS or PPV movies. Any ideas on how to bypass this? Or do I need to buy another device (black box for DVDs) to allow me to copy DVDs? |

| re: Copying DVDs | gillsev Jan 8, 2003 6:15 PM | | Yes, and it exhibits the same response. |
| re: Copying DVDs | Wyatt_ Jan 9, 2003 10:34 AM | | Two questions:
(1) Are you using "S" video connector when doing this?
(2) Why use this box when you can get the Apex 1500 DVD player which allows you to shut off Macro-vision? |
| re: Copying DVDs | gillsev Jan 9, 2003 3:21 PM | | (1) I am only using composite video through this box (no S-Video feature). But I also have direct S-Video coming from the source if I don't go with the box route.
(2) I had that box for a very long time now (even before the invention of DVD's), so I just kept using it till now. |
| Block Box... | The Squeaky Wheel Jan 8, 2003 6:35 PM | | I don't have the answer for you, but I'm wondering what the black box is called & where I can get it..
I'd love to hook up my VCR to my Mac which has DVD-R and record my 9 volume VHS Beatles anthology onto DVD.

I have never had any problem with copy protection with this device but it is a bit older so I don't know if they added it or not.

| copying and digital curious | robinc Jan 9, 2003 5:33 AM | | with your panasonic recorder if you record off satellite or cable box a 5.1 digital movie not necessarily ppv) just off say one of theregular movie channells when they occasionally broadcast in that format)does the digital info also record and is it playable on a regular dvd player?
there is always the amazing apex 600 dvd player original model where you can turn off macrovision if you can find one

| copying and digital curious | gillsev Jan 9, 2003 6:46 AM | | It will only record in Dolby Digital Stereo and yes, it is playable (the DVD-R) on any regular DVD player as long as it becomes "finalized", meaning it becomes DVD Video format after finalized by the Panasonic. |
| Thanks.... | The Squeaky Wheel Jan 9, 2003 6:40 AM | | That's the type of device I'm talking about. Unfortunately, for the price I can't *yet *justify coying a few home movies and a small handful of VHS tapes.
But I'll keep my eye on it....

| re: Copying DVDs | jdenault Jan 9, 2003 11:05 AM | | I could very well be wrong, because I have yet to attempt anything like this yet myself, but... Along with Macrovision, I am under the impression that DVDs are "encoded" with a digital copyright management system (CGMS?). You of course could copy a non-copyrighted disc from the Pioneer to the Panasonic, but anything that has this form of copyright protection will not work. Apparently there are firmware upgrades for some players, I've heard some Sampo and some Apex players, that will disable CGMS. Hope this helps a bit...

| Smokey's right. | Slosh Jan 10, 2003 4:01 AM | | You need the Sima SCC. I have one and it works great. I use it with an S-VHS VCR so I'm not positve it would also work with a DVD-R but one would assume...
The reason why your little black box doesn't work is because there are two levels of Macrovision. VHS uses the older and less robust "level one", while DVD can be either "level one" or "level two". The SCC defeats both so I think it would work for you (I have never come across a DVD I couldn't copy with it).
The nice thing about the SCC (besides having S-Video) is it has picture controls so you can toggle between on and bypass and adjust it until the picture matches. It does cause very slight "ringing" but apparently this ringing is too high in resolution to be captured by S-VHS (either that or my VCR's time base corrector eliminates it). Once properly adjusted, I connected mine to my AV receiver's record outputs - that way it is never in the signal path while viewing. |
