just moved and need some advice on set-up and new tvmaximum15

Just moved and now have room for a wide screen tv. Concessions to my spouse will require non-optimum speaker placements which I can live with, but want to make sure I'm not going to get into trouble. Front speakers are Klipsch KG2 and my subwoofer is a Klipsch 12 inch. How will placing KG2s into a built in compartment affect performance? There will be about 20" air space in back and 3" all around. Would placing the subwoofer on a sturdy shelf 2 feet above one of the speakers and about 1 foot below the ceiling be okay. If not, can I use approximately 60 feet of RCA cable to connect the subwoofer in another location? I know nothing of the new tv sets available. I have found a Toshiba 50H12 at the local Sam's for a good price. It would be coupled with a Yamaha surround sound receiver (RSX5??). I don't think the tv has an optical connection. Is this an issue? Would S video be good enough? How about viewing the tv from the side, how far off center can you be before issues occur? Any thoughts, good or bad, on this tv choice would be welcomed. Input on features to look for in a tv set would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

I think the first major issue is the sub placement. I don't like your current idea too much at all. Generally, the best placement is towards a corner of a room, for the most bass to be heard. But experimentation is key here. But having it higher than your speakers seems a bit goofy to me. Do you have to have a 60' cable otherwise? Optimally, you want the sub not too far away, so that you can locate where the sound is coming from. You want it to gel well with the rest of the system.

As for TVs, Toshiba in general gets very good reviews. Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Hitachi, JVC are also worthwhile to look at. SMokey and WOodman can suggest specific TVs for you to look at. If you are going to spend the cash, go as big as possible, 55 - 65 inch IMO.

I don't think TVs ever have an optical connection, so that isn't an issue. All of these large RPTV sets will have a component input, and that is what you want to use with your dvd player. COmponent is better than S video for TVs this size. If your dvd player doesn't have component (which would be rare) I would get a new one. Hell, a lot of the BB deals give you a free progressive scan dvd player with the puchase of a new RPTV. Oh yeah, make sure your dvd player is progressive scan, you will want this improved picture if the RPTV you are getting is a Hi def model, and I assume it is. Hard to find one now that isn't. The optical connection you are talking about, I assume, is how you would connect the audio portion of your dvd player to your receiver.

WIth RPTV, you don't want to sit too far off axis, because the picture does weaken, as will the audio. Maybe 30 degrees off axis? I'm not sure here. If I had a tv that big though, I am sitting right in the center, every night. Plasma has a better picture off center, but your talking 3-4 times the price. Ask others about TV recommendations.

As far as the speakers, you might want to consider smaller speakers like the Aperion Audio package, and mount them to the walls, instead of in an entertainment center. And get the sub down low.

Thanks for the reply. The subwoofer issue had me concerned. The reason for 60 foot of cable is to take it from the receiver thru the ceiling, across, and back down at another corner of the room. No place for it in the front of the room. Hopefully, the cable shielding will be adequate to prevent spurious signals and noise.

You may have to custom order it then, I'm not sure you will find many off the shelf cables in the 60' range. Others may chime in here (or go to the cable forum) and tell you whether 60' will have any serious audio issues. I like to keep cables as short as possible. Sometimes there isn't a choice.
