Adjustable crossover freq.motnaF

NOOB AT WQRK HERE!

I have Polk RTi70's, CSi30 centre, PSW350 sub.
Am looking at Yamaha rxv-740, rxv1300 or Onkyo TX-SR700 receiver.
I've heard that the Yam's are locked in at 90hz(cross freq)
but the sub is adjustable between 60-160. For an newish audio beginner ( with a taste for good sound ), is this going to be a problem - will the adjustable freq on the sub be good enough?
FYI, the onkyo is adjustable between 80, 100 & 120hz.
Can someone provide a simple explanation on what the crossover freq benefits are? From what i can gather, the sub is supposed to take the 'low-end' load away from the speakers. If this is the case then is the Yam being locked at 90hz a bad thing ( because it should go lower? )?

If you have small satellite type speakers the 100 & 120 Hz option on the Onkyo will be useful. On the other hand, if you have large speakers and want to make the best of them the receiver should have crossover frequency selection at frequencies LESS than 80 Hz, like 40-50 Hz.

Even if you have large speakers you should select small on the receiver to filter out the lowest frequencies. You will get much better performance from the sub by sending it only the lowest frequencies (< 40-50 Hz).

As far as I know some models by Onkyo, Denon 3803 and up and Pioneer Elite models have option of selecting lower than 80 Hz crossover frequency. I think this is vital for optimum integration of bass.

Ideally subwoofers should have by-passable crossovers. Internal crossovers should not be used when the bass management is done correctly by the receiver (not by any Yamaha model!). The internal crossover should be used only for two channel applications when there is no bass management circuitry provided by the preamp/amp/receiver.
