Hi I am currently setting up a home theatre and would appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction for a DVD Player. My System is Onkyo TX-SR800 reciever,ESS Amt1d speakers(front speakers), ESS Tempest LS4's(rear speakers), JVC Zero fives (surround speakers) Klipsch RC-3 II (center speaker), SVS 16/46 subwoofer. I am looking for a good quality player but not in the $800 range!! Does anyone know of a descent player that would be compatible with my system or does it not matter? I Know nothing of the newer dvd players and presently own a panasonic player now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi--

I recently bought a new dvd player...the main thing to look for is the number of different format discs it can play. Like CD-R (just about everything does that now), MP3, DVD-R, JPEG discs, etc. Try to figure out what your needs are and make sure you find a player than handle it all.

Good luck,
-Sam

Has anyone looked at the "Cyberhome CH-DVD 500"? Any experience with Cyberhome as a product? It looks like the $100+/- pricing on the web may place it in the cheaper section, but it is one of the players that comes up often when doing searches for Reigon Free DVDs. It has all the standard features, but if anyone knows if this brand is junk or actually worth getting for a reigon free DVD player?

I own this DVD player. It's absolutely trouble free so far(more than 6 months). The only complaint I have on this model is the message 2X(or 4X,6X,etc..) keeps showing when I use the zoom function. Even the analog audio output is surprisingly good.

Panasonics have a good reputation, but there are a lot of complaints of lasar problems after a year or so. I use the Denon 1600, which uses the same video processing of some of the nicer Panasonics, but supposedly has better DAC's.

You have a nice audio setup. Where the heck did you get those ESS's? I'm a big fan of the AMT line, but haven't heard them for years. I know they still run shop in Sacramento, but...oh well, kudo's on your fine speakers.

Back to the point at hand, a lot of DVD players have really nice pictures - Pioneers, Denons, Panasonics, JVC's, etc. - and each have their fans. Personally, I could live with many, including Toshiba's, for instance, which supposedly have the dreaded Chroma bug, which a lot of us fail to ever notice in the first place. Much of it all depends on what features you want. If you want DVD Audio or SACD, you need to choose a player with one or both these features. If not, you have a host of players in the $200 range that should serve you well. One important feature is the ability to play progressive scan mode on DVD, but many players in this range are able to do so. Other features which many find important include a zoom feature, a time remaining indicator, and the ability to connect with a digital coax cable.

Hope this helps and, if you have time, tell me more about how you happened on those AMT 1's.
