Ok, if a widescreen is 1.77 then, how can this fit into a widescreen tv or a tv with a 16x9 mode?
Ther is no "1.66" widescreen?Smokey

Only available movie formats are 1.33:1 (4:3), 1.78:1 (16:9), 1.85:1, and 2.35:1.

Anf if there was such a format, to be displayed on a wide screen, black bars have to be inserted on each side.
Actually smoke, there is such a thing..Sir Terrence the Terrible 1

Smoke,
This aspect ratio does exist but is most commonly used in european movies and rarely used in america. In our country 1:85 is the most common aspect ratio used for films. In europe it is 1:66:1

So most European movies shown on wide screen TVs will have side bars?

Coldwater,
On a 1:78:1 television(wrongly termed 16x9) black bars will frame all sides of the image on a movie using the 1:66:1 aspect ratio.

Welcome back . . . Was beginning to think you had foresaken us neophytes. I haven't had a good headache in quite a while! Nice to know you are still out there! Did you see my post about the anomaly I am experiencing? What a pain!

I believe that 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen DVDs feature slight 'black bars' on the sides, generally masked by overscan.

"Treasure Planet" is labeled as 1.66:1 OAR, with enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
