| Sony A/V Receiver power rating question | odingd101 Apr 29, 2003 5:56 AM | | I was checking Sony's site on a few of their A/V units, and in checking out STR-DE895/S there's something off. In the desc. you get "this receiver boasts a 6 Channel Power Rating: 110 Watts Per Channel X 6 (8 ohms 1 kHz, THD 0.7%)." but in the list of features:
Stereo Power Rating: 100 Watts Per Channel X 2 (8 ohms 20 Hz-20 kHz, THD .09%)
6 Channel Power Rating: 110 Watts Per Channel X 6 (8 ohms 1 kHz, THD 0.7%) 100 Watts Per Channel X 6 (8 ohms 20Hz-20kHz, THD 0.09%)
Silver Finish A/V Receiver (Also Availible in Black)
6 Channel Power Rating: - 110 Watts Per Channel X 6 (8 ohms 1 kHz, THD 0.7%) 100 Watts Per Channel X 6 (8 ohms 20Hz-20kHz, THD 0.09%)
Stereo Power Rating: - 100 Watts Per Channel X 2 (8 ohms 20 Hz-20 kHz, THD .09%)
Not sure why its listed double like that, but I'm curious to know, what is the big difference in the 2 listings for the 6 channel power rating? 110x6 at 1kHz then 100x6 at 20hz-20kHz??
I'm trying to find a decent A/V unit that will work with my Energy Take 5.2 setup, rated for 100watts on all speakers and the S8.2 sub. The Sony looked simple to setup, I really like the Denon 2802 but it seems a bit confusing for someone new to this whole A/V thing.
Any thoughts, or recommendations for an A/V Unit for HT use (not much for just stereo use) going in a med. sized room? |

Additionally, it is only rated for one channel so it will, in all likelihood, be far less in actuality. Given the choice between the Sony or the Denon I would go with the Denon. Marantz, Outlaw, Yamaha, and Onkyo are other solid choices. Your sub is probably powered so all you need for it is a preout on the receiver and that, as far as subwoofers go, is standard. |

Which is why I would love it when the FTC finally makes these manufacturers give an honest rating when they refer to "100 x 6", which is one of the most misleading marketing devices ever when it comes to recievers. I think that it should be (X) number of watts with all channels driven simultaneously. |
| Some do | Bryan May 1, 2003 7:13 AM | | Others don't. My Outlaw, for example, says, "65 watts per channel, 20Hz - 20KHz, 8 ohms, 0.05%THD, three channels driven." Oddly enough, I believe those statistics to be accurate. Outlaws reasoning behind the three channels is a good one. Typically you will never have sound coming out of more than three speakers at any given time which is why they rated it for three channels only. |
