| HDTV or not to HDTV? That is the question.. | krabby5 Apr 29, 2003 3:30 PM | | I want to get a 36" flat tv...I don't need stereo or anything special as far as sound from the tv..I will be using my A/V receiver and home speakers for that. It will basically be used as a monitor...
Is there really THAT much of a difference between a digital flat screen and one with HD? I have seen the difference at stores, but that can be deceiving. Is it really worth the extra grand for high definition? I would like to stay around $1000 or so for a tv...
Should I wait or go for a regular flat digital tv?
Either way, which models are better for the buck?
thanks in advance |

Remember, a DVD has 480 lines of resolution, while HD broadcasts in 1080 lines! That's more than double, and it shows. I swear, with some broadcasts, you feel as if the image is real behind a glass.
That being said, I'd save your money, go with a non HD model on your 36", and when the time, space, money allows, get a nice big screen for HD.
Otherwise, you're going to have a 36" HDTV for sometime, then say "Well, I wish I had gotten a 55" or 65" widescreen HD set. But you can't, because you don't want to consider the extra money you spend on getting a 36" HD set wasted money.
I'd get a regular analog 36" set for now, which by the way looks great with digital cable, and then upgrade in the future to a larger HD widescreen set. It's a smarter way to spend your money.
Just my opinion. |

That is the question.. | PDK Apr 30, 2003 2:07 PM | | If you go with an analog set, I recommend the Toshiba 36AF42 which you should be able to find for about $849 (or 36AF62 with PIP for $50-$100 more). Comparable Sonys are $100 more but I think the Toshiba's have a better picture and quality. To get the HD version of the Toshiba, you could expect to pay about $1650. Incidentally, I was in a similar dilemma (knowing I wanted a tube set) wondering analog v. HDTV but only having room for a 32. I bought the Toshiba 32HF72 for about $1050 and wish I would have pocketed the extra $350 by going with the analog set. I just think that while it is great for progressive scan DVDs, I'm on digital cable and don't get a lot of benefit. I thought the HD would tide me over, but just don't think it was worth the extra dosh. I intended on buying a large widescreen HDTV in a couple years when I buy a different house. Now I'm entertaining the idea of a plasma... |
