Yamaha 6.1 HTR-5490 6th. Speaker Necessary?CaptCurt

Upgraded from Sony "DD" Ready , Toshiba DVD that had Proc.
in it to Yamaha HTR-5490. Does a Receiver that is 6.1 need
the 6th speaker hooked up to sound far superior?.Yamaha
sounds good and maybe more spacious, which I guess is one of
ones goals, but Sony a far less inexpensive Receiver seemed
to channel more of the sound at me and had a good sound.
I expected the Yamaha to blow away the Sony for Movies, its
different But????. Will 6th speaker hooked up improve movies
that are only recorded in "DD"/DTS 5.1? Thanks CaptCurt

Well I have a Marantz receiver that has six channels, but no es or ex. I really don't notice a big difference using it with 5.1 channel DVD's. I mean if a helicopter flys from the surround left to right, you do notice it coming out of the rear center. All 5.1 movies I watch I use all six channels just to fill up the gap. I mean I could do just fine without it, but it's nice for movies and six channel stereo. The way the Marantz plays music keeps me from wishing I bought a receiver that has ES and EX. This is my opinion.
